Hi everyone,
I just received the following notice from SCONet, an orienteering listserver, and thought that people here might be interested!
***********************************************
Recently, I was contacted by a representative of ëNo Opportunity Wastedí, a new television show that will debut on the Discovery Channel in the fall of next year. The show will let ordinary people live out a dream that can completed in three days, and for not more than $3,000. Although any dream will be considered, the show is particularly interested in those that promote the outdoor, active sides of people.
Even though the show does air for about ten months, production will need to get underway well before then. In fact, the search for people to be on the show is now underway. The representative of the show that I have been speaking with has orienteering experience, in school, and in college, while growing up in Canada. He felt that orienteers, with their adventurous spirits and willingness to head off into unknown terrain, might be exactly the kind of dreamers the show is looking for, and asked me to post information about the shows search for people with dreams.
Following this message, you will find a press release detailing the search for people to appear on the show. Information, and sample dreams, can also be found at the showís web site, http://media.dsc.discovery.com/fansites/now/now.html.
The deadline for applying is December 31st, so start dreaming. An orienteer being selected for the show would be great publicity for our sport (as long as the person keeps remembering to mention orienteering, which, granted, could be tricky while in the midst of living out a dream, and having it filmed, in just three days). Also, whether or not an orienteer is selected to be on the show, orienteering may still get some exposure, or have some involvement, with the show. If someone has a dream that involves navigating, we may be called upon to serve in a technical advisory capacity.
Dream on. Feel free to share this message with other members of your club, or anyone you know who might have a dream. Perhaps after the application period is complete, someone can put together an article for ëOrienteering North Americaí with some of the three-day dreams of orienteers.
Most of your questions should be answered at the ëNo Opportunity Wastedí web site. If there is something you think I can answer, however, please feel free to send it along to me.

THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL SEARCHES THE COUNTRY FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO GREENLIGHT THEIR OWN DREAMS IN A NEW SERIES, NO OPPORTUNITY WASTED
-- Online Application Process Launched November 8 at Discovery.com --
What would you do if you had 72 hours, $3,000, and one dream? Beginning November 8, 2003, the Discovery Channel launched a nationwide search to find America's most imaginative dreamers for a brand new series called NO OPPORTUNITY WASTED . . . NOW!
NO OPPORTUNITY WASTED (NOW!) dares people to live out their dreams on national television. No more "woulda, coulda, shoulda" - NOW! will take away all excuses by clearing personal calendars and giving our dreamers 72 hours and a little seed money to make their dreams happen. And, ultimately it is up to them to create the ideas and then turn them into action.
In this new series, NOW! challenges the chosen dreamers to let go of the handrails, face their fears, and swerve off the road they've followed for years. Led by host Phil Keoghan, also seen in the Emmy Award-winning The Amazing Race, NOW! is about seizing the moment and creating the once-in-a-lifetime experiences you always imagined for yourself. It might mean eating a five-star dinner on the edge of a volcano, assembling your old high school football team to replay the game lost from 20-years ago, organizing your own Kentucky Derby or even auditioning for a Broadway show.
The Discovery Channel will scour the country this November and December for people with rich, multi-layered dreams that accentuate the power of imagination, celebrate the joy of the human spirit and exemplify the passion to expand one's life. To participate, dreamers must submit an application available at http://www.discovery.com from now through the end of the year.
NOW! is based on the life philosophy of veteran television host and adventurer Phil Keoghan. After a near death experience at age 19, Keoghan sat down and wrote a list of things he wanted to do before he died - creating his life philosophy to live life to the fullest every day.
Production of NOW! will begin in early 2004. Applicants will know they were selected when Keoghan literally shows up on their doorstep, walks into their work cubicle or sky dives into their cornfield. Phil will then give them the opportunity to live their dream . . . NOW! This new series is scheduled to premiere in 4th Quarter 2004 on the Discovery Channel.
NO OPPORTUNITY WASTED is being produced by No Opportunity Wasted Television, Inc. for the Discovery Channel. Phil Keoghan, Louise Keoghan and Peter Pistor are executive producers for No Opportunity Wasted Television, Inc. For the Discovery Channel, Robert Wesley Branch is executive producer.
