Hello All,
I would also appreciate a file for programming these radios with good local frequencies. I intend to offer the programming as a free service once we get the Baofeng (now Pofung) radios in stock at the store.

Hi all
Thanks for the excellent advice (sorry, "elmering"); I've ordered the Baofeng el-cheapo model and the standard accessories (mic, usb cable, better antenna). Does anyone want to let me clone their stored freqs?

Stephen,
Welcome to the HAM community!! For a cost effective first radio, I recommend buying the mighty BaoFeng UV-5R for $25 from amazon.

There are lots of detailed guides on using it, such as this: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/
It is not as simple to use as some of the more expensive units, but for the money it cannot be beat. I have several 2m transceivers, high end mobiles included but I still have and use several of these chinese radios because they are extremely effective and durable.
I know this does not answer your question, but I do not have details on a radio for loan from the club station, hopefully somebody else can chime in there.

Hello all, I'm a newbie, having just passed my technician's exam, and wanted to ask about borrowing to a 2m transceiver so I can start monitoring the local nets. There are a few handheld units at the Red Cross radio shack with numbers taped on them; are these loaner units? If not, does anyone on the list have a "spare" 2M unit I could borrow until I figure out what to invest in? ... any replies appreciated...
