I just received notice that Sunday will be another Orienteering meet at the
Topanga State Park. The directions to get there are as follows (taken from
the LAOC web page):
Topanga Canyon State Park
Trippet ranch, Topanga State Park, in the Santa Monica mountains. To get
there from the 101 in Woodland Hills, go south on Topanga Canyon Blvd about
8 miles. From PCH go north on Topanga Canyon to just past Old Topanga Canyon
Rd. Either way, watch for a "Topanga State Park" sign and turn east onto
Entrada. Go about a mile, bearing left at the fork. Registration will be at
the end of the parking lot in the shaded picnic area. Start times are from
10:00 to noon. Expect a warm, not hot, sunny day with a cooling afternon
breeze.
There is a $5 parking fee inside the park so you may want to car pool. Some
free roadside or turnout parking spaces from 1/2 to 2km from the entrance
exist. From there you can walk or hitch a ride with other orienteers. Come
early.
The terrain is very diverse. Lots of open land with oak forest, slow to
runable. Typical of the Santa Monicas, dense chaparral covers much of the
area, but you will be able to avoid the fight unless you choose to travel
through it. . Deep river gullys slice through the old ranch. If you haven't
been to a meet here in a few years, you will be delighted by the 5 color
map, recently field checked in 95 and further upgraded in 97. Cartography is
o-cad.
