Hi All - Several club members have shown interest in attending a 5 WPM code class. Our last class just ended April 10th, but if there is enough interest in another class I will arrange for it. So if you: A. Hold a General Class CSCE and need the 5 WPM CSCE to upgrade B. Are a Technician and would like to add on HF privileges C. Have your Novice, Technician Plus, General or Extra Class license and haven't used CW is so long that you would like to renew your skills Then please email me with: 1. Your Name & Callsign 2. Hi Fellow SBARC Members - I have heard a lot of opinions regarding the FCC Amateur Radio License Restructuring and a lot of it has been very negative - the good news is that none of it has come from SBARC members! Below is a timely message from an outfit called Hudson LookElectronic Ham Radio News. A friend of mine by the name of Tim KD5CKP sent ti to me from Olive Branch, MS. Here is a short, well worded message that we can all take to heart. Go Yell It From The Mountain.... I got this from the Hudson Look electronic ham radio Newsletter. Every currently licensed ham should read it. Congratulations to Frank Fallon N2FF, on an excellent welcome mat to those who will follow us: - BillWA6ITF(a)aol.com NEWS FROM THE HUDSON LOOP - TOLERANCE AND A WELCOME MAT -- AN EDITORIAL April 15, 2000 marked an important milestone for Amateur Radio in the United States. It was the first time in over 60 years that US Amateurs can operate throughout all the HF bands without having passed a Morse code test at 13 WPM or higher. In 1937 the FCC upped the code speed to 13 WPM from 10 WPM. Many of the new upgraded hams will now be using the HF bands for the first time, and it appears there will be a lot of them from reports of crowds at recent VE sessions nationwide. They will be operating both phone and CW, and some of them won't know what life is like on HF. They may not realize that one doesn't call CQ on HF by tuning to a quiet spot and announcing that they're "Listening on frequency." They won't know much, if anything, about band plans, about nets, about working "up", or a host of other things. They will need help, just as badly as you and I needed help when we first went on HF. They will need to learn things that have never been part of any FCC test. They will need guidance, not hostility and transferred anger from those unhappy with the new FCC license structure. Please, oh please, be generous with your help! Be tolerant of their mistakes and be friendly and tactful when you offer suggestions for improvement. Please, put out the welcome mat for them. Let them know also when they've done something right, not only when they've done something wrong. We certainly don't want a bunch of grouches turning them away from ham radio! It's going to be our task to Elmer them into Amateur Radio. Caltech On-foot Direction Finding Session

Date: Saturday, April 22 Time: 12 to 3 PM Place: Caltech campus in Pasadena Talk-in (optional): 145.18(-) PL156.7 Call K0OV This on-foot direction finding (foxhunting, radio-orienteering, ARDF) practice/demonstration session is sponsored by the Caltech Orienteering Club. All ages are welcome. A ham radio license and/or knowledge of radio equipment is not required. There is no charge for participation. Practice 2-meter transmitters will go on the air around 11 AM, and the main hunt will begin at 12:30 PM. For the main hunt, plan to arrive at noon. As usual, the main hunt will have six cycling 2-meter FM hidden transmitters on 146.565 MHz. There may be a bonus transmitter on 80 meters (3580 KHz). If you have RDF equipment for 80m, be sure to bring it, too. The 80m fox will be optional; it does not count for the final standings. If possible, bring a handi-talkie, receiver, or scanner covering the two-meter band for each person who will be going ARDFing. If you have directional antennas, attenuators, or other on-foot 2m RDF equipment, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. For those with no radio gear, a few ARDF receiver/antenna sets will be available for rental from Caltech at a small fee. California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is south of the 210 Freeway between the Hill Avenue and Lake Avenue exits. The hunt starts from Avery Center, an undergraduate residence near the northeast corner of the campus. Turn into the parking lot from Del Mar Boulevard or Chester Avenue. Look for the orange and white Orienteering flags and signs. Hunt area is the Caltech campus, in accordance with a paper map to be provided to participants. Sunday April 16th - Orienteering Meet

I just received notice that Sunday will be another Orienteering meet at the Topanga State Park. The directions to get there are as follows (taken from the LAOC web page): Topanga Canyon State Park Trippet ranch, Topanga State Park, in the Santa Monica mountains. To get there from the 101 in Woodland Hills, go south on Topanga Canyon Blvd about 8 miles. From PCH go north on Topanga Canyon to just past Old Topanga Canyon Rd. Either way, watch for a "Topanga State Park" sign and turn east onto Entrada. Go about a mile, bearing left at the fork. Registration will be at the end of the parking lot in the shaded picnic area. Start times are from 10:00 to noon. Expect a warm, not hot, sunny day with a cooling afternon breeze. There is a $5 parking fee inside the park so you may want to car pool. Some free roadside or turnout parking spaces from 1/2 to 2km from the entrance exist. From there you can walk or hitch a ride with other orienteers. Come early. The terrain is very diverse. Lots of open land with oak forest, slow to runable. Typical of the Santa Monicas, dense chaparral covers much of the area, but you will be able to avoid the fight unless you choose to travel through it. . Deep river gullys slice through the old ranch. If you haven't been to a meet here in a few years, you will be delighted by the 5 color map, recently field checked in 95 and further upgraded in 97. Cartography is o-cad. ---------- Sunday, April 16th Starts between 10am and noon, Registration opens at 9:30am. 3 hour limit on any course, Control pickup will begin at 2:30pm. Offering most excellent White, Yellow, Orange, Green and Red point to point courses. This time of the year the foxtails are still green, so your socks will survive! Amateur Extra Class License still has value for FCC exam credit! How long this will be allowed is unknown: 73, Don Milbury, W6YN http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/commoperators/Welcome.html#QUALALL ------------------------------------------------------ SECOND CLASS RADIOTELEGRAPH OPERATOR'S CERTIFICATE (T2) The T2 authorizes the holder to operate, repair, and maintain ship and coast radiotelegraph stations in the maritime services. It also confers all of the operating authority of the T3 and MP. The Commission will grant credit for Telegraphy Elements 1 and 2 to applicants who hold an unexpired (or within the grace period) FCC-issued Amateur Extra Class operator license. HOW TO OBTAIN A COMMERCIAL RADIO OPERATOR LICENSE Submit a completed FCC Form 753 Submit TWO identical, passport type photographs taken within the last six months. Element 1 - Basic radio law and operating practice with which every maritime radio operator should be familiar. To pass, an examinee must correctly answer at least 18 out of 24 questions. Element 5 - Radiotelegraph Operating Procedure. Radio operating procedures and practices generally followed or required in communicating by means of radiotelegraph stations. To pass, an examinee must correctly answer at least 38 out of 50 questions. Element 6 - Advanced Radiotelegraph. Technical, legal, and other matters applicable to the operation of all classes of radiotelegraph stations. To pass, an examinee must correctly answer at least 75 out of 100 questions. The Final Final

A rare operating event FYI: Portishead Radio/GKA and all remaining VHF stations will close at 1200z on Sunday 30 April. Portishead Radio first came on air 80 years ago in 1920 and was to become the largest communications center in the world. It employed over 340 people and was the CW and RT center for the British Commonwealth. The history of the MF service traces right back to Marconi himself. 73, Don Milbury, W6YN ------------------------------------------------- PORTISHEAD RADIO/GKA, the United Kingdom's long range radio station and one of the world's most famous names in the maritime communications field, is scheduled to close at 1200z on Sunday 30th April 2000. Radio Amateurs should now get their antennas and rigs tuned up for a once-only CW event. With the station using it's multi-kilowatt transmitters at Rugby and it's remote receiving array at Somerton, the station's Radio Officers at Burnham hope to bring you, from the comfort of your own radio shack, the chance to communicate directly with them before the station's transmitters fall silent for the final time. This cw-only event is scheduled for Saturday 29th April 2000 from 0700z to 1900z.
