VHF QSO Party

Hi everyone, The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club's contest group will be operating the VHF QSO Party this weekend starting at 1100 local time on Saturday. Again we will be on top of Elings Park next to the hang glider hill. All the antennas and towers are already on site and Saturday morning at 0800 we will finalize the construction of the stations. Anyone wanting to help in the fun come on by. We will be monitoring K6TZ 146.79 if you need directions. Here are the frequencies that you can contact us on: 6 meters SSB: 50.125 MHz 6 meters FM: 52.525, 52.540 MHz 2 meters SSB:144.200 MHz 2 meters FM:146.55 MHz 1-1/4 meters SSB: 222.100 MHz 1-1/4 meters FM: 223.500 MHz 70cm SSB: 432.100 MHz 70cm FM: 446.00 MHz 23 cm SSB: 1296.100 MHz 23 cm FM: 1294.50 MHz 10 GHz & 24 GHz will be coordinated on 70 cm SSB. VHF QSO Party

The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club's Contest SIG (Special Interest Group) will be operating in the ARRL September VHF QSO Party this coming weekend, Sept. 9 & 10. We will be moving Equipment on site and setting up late Friday Afternoon Sept. 8. On contest starts at 10:00 local time on Saturday September 9 an goes through Sunday evening. We will be operating 6 meters, 2 meters, 220 MHz, 432 MHz, 900 MHz?, 1296 MHz, 10 GHz and 24 GHz. There will be three operating positions two in F.D. tents and the 6 meter station in the SBARC Van. We will be back at "Ham Hill" in Elings Park. Directions to the site are as follows: - Take Las Positas Road off of Highway 101and head toward the Ocean or South/East. - Las Positas ends at Cliff Drive, make a left at the stop sign and head up the hill. - Before you get to the top of the hill, the first turn off on the left is a dirt road that goes through a chain link fence. - Take the dirt road and keep to the left and head up the hill where the Hang Gliders or Parasails will be flying from - Drive past the upper parking lot and turn left toward the top of the hill, you will see the the towers, tents and SBARC Van. Anyone wanting to help set up and operate one or all of the VHF/UHF many bands just show up and/or get in touch with myself, Dick W6DNN or Rod WB9KMO. Next So. California ARDF Hunt

I just received this from Joe. ------------------------------ Huntington Central Park in Huntington Beach will be the site of southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt on Sunday, October 1. This is an official training session for ARDF Team USA 2000, but it is free and open to everyone who wants to see and try the sport. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment is not required. At least four of the twelve team members are scheduled to attend. Come out and meet some of the radio-athletes who will represent us at the World Championships in China during October. The park is 350 acres, although some of it is unavailable for ARDF. It is relatively flat, but there is lots of vegetation and plenty of trails. The two-meter course will be suitable for both beginners and advanced radio-orienteers. Hunters may go out as individuals or pairs. All ages are welcome, but young children should be accompanied by an adult. Practice 2-meter transmitters will go on the air around 11:30 AM, and the main 5-fox hunt will begin at 12:30 PM. There are picnic tables nearby, so you can bring your lunch. An optional 80-meter transmitter will be included in the course, so bring gear for that band if you have it. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your HT or scanner. A limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Course maps will be provided, so bring your own compass, protractor and pencil. Make sure all batteries are fresh. Directions: We will start from the parking lot at the north end of the park. The entrance is on the south side of Slater Avenue, east of Golden West Street intersection. There are no entry or parking fees, but parking may be limited depending on other activities in the park that day. Look for the orange and white Orienteering flag and signs. Youth Oriented Amateur Radio TV Spot

From: The ARRL Letter, Vol 19, No 33 ITVA PRODUCES YOUTH-ORIENTED AMATEUR RADIO TV SPOT The San Francisco Chapter of the International Television Association has produced a 30-second TV public service announcement designed to assist the amateur community in recruiting more young people to the hobby. Copies of the TV spot are being made available to Amateur Radio clubs for distribution to local television outlets at nominal cost. Each year ITVA volunteers produce a public service announcement for a charitable or nonprofit organization. This year, they focused on Amateur Radio. ITVA President Ken Alan, K6PSI, said he'd been hearing about the need to recruit "new blood" into ham radio, "so I suggested it to the PSA committee, and everyone loved the idea." ITVA recruited several San Francisco Bay area hams to consult on the development of the story line for the 30-second spot. Spot producer Michelle Brown said ITVA "focused on the message on the two concepts that most appeal to that demographic: high technology and disaster preparedness." Alan says the producers "wanted to show young people using H-Ts for socializing and in a disaster scenario." Referring to the "high tech world of Amateur Radio" and using rock music in the background, the announcement points out that hams can talk to people all over the world. The spot also depicts a simulated earthquake or explosion, where the things start to shake, lights flicker and go out and there's a cry for help. The young, female ham grabs her H-T to call for assistance. The spot concludes with an invitation to "find out more about amateur radio" and provides a 10-second visual backdrop for a local sponsoring club to superimpose its name and contact information. The whole idea, Alan told ARRL, was to steer clear of ham radio stereotypes and "just show the hobby as contemporary, high-tech and fun." A sample letter from a colleague is presented below to help with your composition efforts. 73, Don Milbury, W6YN ----------------------------------------------------- Dear Governor Davis: Please sign SB1714 regarding zoning ordinances and Amateur Radio antennas, passed unanimously by both the California Senate and Assembly. As I'm sure you know, the Amateur Radio Service provides voluntary emergency communications service, as well as advancement of technology and international goodwill. In addition to a career as a radio engineer, a Silicon Valley CEO, a Stanford professor and a venture investor, I've been an active Radio Amateur since I was a teenager nearly five decades ago. I've seen the benefit of Amateur communications when the telephone and public safety systems collapse in local and distant disasters, such as the Loma Prieta and Mexico City earthquakes, the Marysville floods and the Oakland Hills and Los Gatos fires. Also, I've been gratified that numerous advances in computer networking, telephony and safety communications originated in the Amateur Service, which has also provided a good share of the technologists needed to advance these areas. The Amateur Service is federally licensed and regulated under 47 CFR § 97. To have effective communications capability in times of disasters, Amateur Radio licensees must practice and advance their skills in communications and technology before the need suddenly arises for their services. To do this, individual Radio Amateurs require antenna structures at their homes high enough to conform with the laws of physics and as permitted under federal license privileges. In the past this requirement has been frustrated by the widely varying levels of local zoning as desired by various communities, leading in many cases to burdensome requirements on the Radio Amateur and even to costly litigation. SB1714 provides a mechanism for resolving the current problem, in which well-meaning communications volunteers must today run the gauntlet of local zoning agencies that have minimal radio technical and regulatory knowledge, and therefore do not uniformly provide the federally mandated reasonable accommodation and minimum practicable regulation of station antenna structures under 47 CFR §97.15. The Amateur Radio Service, through its national organization, the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), stands ready under the terms of SB1714 to provide your office, without cost to the public, the benefit of its members' specialized technical capability and emergency operations experience. Again, please respond to the bipartisan wishes of both houses of the California Legislature by permitting SB1714 to become law without delay.
