SBARC's February, 2010 Club Meeting

Greetings all SBARC members and guests! This Friday night, February 19, 2010, will be when we hold our second meeting of the New Year. Our new president, Al Soenke, WA6VNN, wants to meet and greet every one of you. He also wants to hear your ideas of what kind of exciting things we as a club might do this year. Bring your thoughts, your good ideas, and let him hear from you. I have a couple of those myself. What do you think SBARC should do this year to head us in the direction of growing to 500 members that we were famous for? You do know that absolutely nothing is impossible. We did put a man on the moon, didn't we? What would you like SBARC to do? The program for the evening will be Portable Operations. Can you imagine what this might be about? Are you prepared to run your station completely independent of the power lines? How long could you do that? This should be fascinating. Bring your friends with you. Do you like our refreshment break during the meetings? Are you able to bring some goodies for the refreshment table? Cookies, donuts, cake, fresh fruit -- always a hit. Please make a note to yourself. Either President Al or Exec. VP Michael, W7HUT, will be bringing the hot Starbucks coffee. Can anyone bring some soft drinks? Come early, stay late. Put your hand out. Welcome some new hams to our wonderful hobby. Bring some junque for our 'Free to a Good Home' table. I'm bringing about 50 pounds of it. Take some home with you. Be sure you don't miss that table which is on the north side of the room under the windows. As always, it will be my pleasure to greet as many of you as I can. If you are new to our club, we meet at the Goleta Union School District board room which is located at 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, directly across the street from the Goleta Library. New 6 meter repeater

NEW 6 METER REPEATER IN TOWN Effective this date a new 6 meter repeater was installed at the K6TZ site on La Vigia Hill. All operational coverage reports should be sent to W6AMS or W1UUQ. Repeater: 51.82 MHz Output 51.32 MHz Input 131.8 Hz PL Power is 25 watts into 3 db collinear antenna Controller is an RLC-4 Thanks to Andy Seybold, W6AMS, and John Thornton, W6HD for their personal effort and contribution with providing the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) residuals. And, special recognition to Shaw Takeuchi, AE6BL, for providing a remote access through the Internet for RLC-4 programming. Great job everyone! PS. For those with 220 you can get on the 223.92 MHz Santa Cruz Island repeater remote base on 6 meters and link it to the new equipment. If in doubt about how to operate the remote then contact the training crew on .79 who would be glad to help you out.

A friend I used to work with at Tektronix found this. Thought I'd pass it on - Greg The (British) Royal Society has made the Proceedings of the Royal Society (Mathematical, Physical & Engineering Sciences) available to read and download for free to celebrate its 350th anniversary. This offer is good through February 28th. After that, the pay wall goes back up. The papers go back to the time of Isaac Newton. As just one example, if you've struggled with applications of Maxwell's equations, the following paper is where it all started: A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field J. Clerk Maxwell, Proc R. Soc. Lond. 1863 vol. 13 531-6 The first announcement of Maxwell's discovery that light, electricity and magnetism can be understood in a single framework, underlying radio, television, and our whole communications technology. According to the site, there are about 65,000 papers available. Ernie Stockero, W6SB, SK

Sad news: Ernie Stockero, W6SB, passed away early Thursday morning. You probably never ran across Ernie unless you operated extremely high speed CW on the low end of 40 meters. He moved here from Milwaukee with the influx of Delco employees in the early 1970's. He really loved his original call....W9HI.....but he had to trade it in for a W6 callsign after moving here. The FCC assigned him the call K6BS...which I thought was a very desireable callsign, but Ernie didn't see the humor in being K-6-Brown-Sugar (Hi). So he traded it in and ended up with W6SB......which is a great call for a Santa Barbara resident. Illness curtailed Ernie's ham radio operations several years ago........ Ernie is survived by his wife Shirley and 5 sons. I believe that services are scheduled for Saturday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Rest In Peace Ernie Bill Gross W6FF

To: SBARC Listserver From: Bill Talanian, W1UUQ Subject: 223.92 co-channel I received confirmation that the Lemon Heights Repeater, KD6HK, has officially moved to 224.32 on 30 January bringing to close the long debated issue of co-channel interference to the Island input. When you have the opportunity please THANK the Catalina Amateur Repeater Assn. folks and the 220 SMA who cooperated with us in this effort. In particular Dan Corth, AD6HK and Frank Shannon, KF6RAL, for their personal attention and resolution.
