Reminder of ARDF at Lake Los Carneros on Saturday, 11/12

Clearing skies and temperatures in the 70s are forecast for the Santa Barbara area on Saturday 11/12. It should be great weather for our on-foot transmitter hunting session, which will get under way around 9 AM at Lake Los Carneros with practice transmitters nearby and a beginner-to-intermediate level five-transmitter two-meter ARDF course starting at about 10 AM. At this point, nobody has signed up to build antennas, so if you want to do that, you must contact Marvin Johnston KE6HTS (marvin(a)west.net) right away so he will have the kits with him. More information on the kits is at www.homingin.com. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. There is no charge for participation. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Courses close at 2 PM. For those interested, we will meet at a local restaurant after al l the transmitters have been picked up for further discussion of ARDF. Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. The hunt start will probably be in the parking lot. Lake Los Carnaros Practice ARDF Session

Our next southern California on-foot transmitter hunting session will be Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. In addition to some easy fox transmitters to help you learn and test your equipment, there will be a beginner-level international-rules course on the two-meter band. An optional 80-meter fox transmitter may also be on the air. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. There is no charge for participation. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. For those who want their own RDF gear for use with their own two-meter hand-held radios or scanners, there will be kits for measuring-tape yagis and active attenuators. Also available is an assembled and tested assembly that includes the power switch, BNC connector, housing and battery, ready to install as the tape measure beam is built. There will be tools and soldering stations for building. If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry because there will be experts to help you. If you want to build an antenna/attenuator kit, you must register in advance. Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and get more information about equipment. If you already have equipment and just want to hunt transmitters, you don't need to pre-register. If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:00 AM. Please be prompt. Transmitter hunting will begin about 10:00 AM. You may start out on the courses at any time until 12 noon. Courses close at 2 PM. For those interested, we will meet at a local rest aurant after all the transmitters have been picked up for further discussion of ARDF. All Amateurs capable of operating on the exercise frequencies are invited to participate. One of the Section goals for 2016 is to improve the communications between Amateurs in the Section. Several efforts have been in process this year to publicize our many Nets and to implement supplemental electronic communications. This exercise will investigate the ability to use RF capabilities to communicate information across the whole Section at one time and to involve a large number of operators in a Net environment. Note: I need to know no later than October 19 from anyone who wants to build one of the Complete Tape Measure Beam kits. Thanks! Marvin, KE6HTS The next southern California on-foot transmitter hunting session will be Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Bonelli Regional Park. It is intended for both beginner and intermediate level transmitter hunters. All ages are welcome, so bring the family. A ham radio license and/or knowledge of radio equipment are not requirements. Try your hand at some easy two-meter transmitters set by Joe Moell K0OV plus a 5-fox two-meter international-rules course of beginner-to-moderate difficulty, set by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. One or more fox transmitters on the 80-meter band may also be set up to try. Experts will be on hand to help you. For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin will have kits for measuring-tape yagis and active attenuator circuit boards. He also has complete antenna/attenuator kit that includes the power switch, BNC connector, housing and battery, ready to install as the tape measure beam is built. If you already have equipment and just want to hunt transmitters, you don't need to pre-register. If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:30 AM. Please be prompt. Beginner transmitters will be on the air at that time. The main 5-fox hunt will start about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start the courses at any time until 1 PM. Courses close at 3 PM. If you have receivers, scanners, directional antennas, attenuators, or other equipment suitab le for on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. A limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan. Trails are primitive in some areas of the park, so wear sturdy shoes. All ages are welcome, but young children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Bonelli Regional Park is near Raging Waters, Brackett Field, and Puddingstone Reservoir. From the 57 freeway north of I-10, take the Via Verde exit and go east through the entrance to the park. There is a per-vehicle entry fee. Go approximately 1/4 mile beyond the entrance and turn left into the parking lot for the Snack Shoppe (formerly the bike rental stand). The chemical was to arrive at Aerojet Rocketdyne for propulsion system testing but will never get there now. The tower hurridly notifies Santa Barbara County Fire which initiates the Reverse 911 system to awaken and notify all residents and businesses in the South County to immediately evacuate and move to higher ground. Yes, it is now 3:14 AM. Sleeping people don't even want to answer their phones at this time of the night. The freight train continues right through Santa Barbara as SB County Office of Emergency Services, in conjunction with its Ventura County counterpart, notifies Union Pacific to have the engineer to stop the train along the Rincon where the population density is lower than at other places . . . . > Yes, the above scenario was made up. Ham radio classes and exam session

SBARC will be holding its regular Volunteer Examiner ham radio testing session Saturday, September 10th. See link below. I will be teaching a "cram course" for this test. There will be three evening sessions from 7 to 9 PM on Wednesday through Friday, September 7 through 9 for those interested. Classes will be at Impulse Advanced Communications, 6144 Calle Real, Goleta. This is upstairs from the Bay Club gym, formerly Spectrum. The goal of the class is to enable you to pass the test, not to make you FCC lawyers or electronic engineers. Greetings from the K6R Team

Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, My name is Dave Swanson, KG5CCI, and on behalf of myself and Wyatt Dirks, AC0RA, I'd like to say hello to everyone. Wyatt and I are part of the K6R team that will be camping on Santa Rosa Island inside the CM93 grid square, on September 16th-18th in hopes of handing out that rare grid on Amateur Radio Satellites. We have assembled all the required equipment, secured all the necessary permissions, and arranged for travel and campsites on the Island, and we're just sorting out the final details now. One of those details we were hoping to find a volunteer from the club to help with. We are in need of a expedition 'Pilot' of sorts to help us relay information back to the AMSAT Mailing list from the Island. We'd like to be able to update chasers as to who we have in the logs, so they know they made it. Since we'll be well outside cellular range on Santa Rosa, our best method of doing this is the K6TZ 220mhz repeater on Diablo Peak, on Santa Cruz Island. We will have 220mhz radios with us for this exact reason, and we think this will be the best method to get information out to folks. So, if you have a reliable link into the 223.920 repeater on Diablo Peak, will be around the weekend of the 16th-18th, and want to copy and relay a bunch of information for a mini-dxpedition of sorts, please email me back at dave(a)druidnetworks.com with your availability and willingness to help, and we'll discuss the specifics of what is required. On a side, but somewhat related note, on Saturday the 17th between 2PM and 4PM PDT we plan on doing some terrestrial VHF/UHF work from the 1200ft MSL 'Black Mountain' on Santa Rosa Island, inside CM93. We'll have a small 2 meter and 70cm beam with us, and we'd love to make some simplex contacts on the high bands from the rare grid. 805 Area Code Change

By Tom Kisken of the Ventura County Star Posted: 6:47 p.m. 0 Plans to add a new area code to the 805 mean Paul Strauss may one day have to dial 11 digits to call someone who lives next door. That seems like a step backward to the Camarillo resident who spoke Monday at an Oxnard public hearing on a proposal that could be implemented in 2018. "It's like we're catering to the technology instead of the technology catering to the individual," said Strauss, who is 62. "… It's my generation that's going to have the hardest time with this." The hearing focused on the dwindling prefixes available in the three-plus county region that currently uses an 805 area code that dates back to 1957. Only 40 of 792 prefixes are left and they are expected to run out by the middle of 2018. That means a change in area code is unavoidable, said Joe Cocke, of the North American Numbering Plan Administration, which administers phone numbers in 20 countries, including the United States. In the plan called an overlay and proposed by the telecommunications industry, people who currently use 805 would keep it. People who move to the region beginning in mid-2018 or who want to add lines could be assigned a new, still unknown area code. A final decision from the California Public Utilities Commission, which organized Monday's hearing, is likely to come next year and be implemented before the prefixes are dialed out. But the overlay means people would have to dial 10 digits with every phone call. On land lines, people would also have to dial a 1. The cost of the call would not be affected. The extra dialing is a concern for some. "The seven (digits) is bad enough," said Pat Brown, 75, of Oxnard, relating decades of telephone experience that date back to the days when operators connected local calls. "This overlay is going to be horrendous." Brown suggested a better alternative that involves splitting off part of the 805 and assigning it a new area code. But splitting an area code into two has become almost obsolete. The last split nationwide was nine years ago with California's most recent split coming 12 years ago. In addition to technical problems that could temporarily affect text messages, a split means people have to change their phone numbers. That can carry a financial punch for some, said Cocke. "It hurts a business if they have to change their phone number," he said. Linda Calderon, 75, of Oxnard, said she supports the overlay in part because she does not want to change her phone number or her business cards. Ten-digit dialing is routine for cellphone users, noted Jerome Candelaria, of the California Cable and Telecommunications Association. "It appears that having to change the area code is more disruptive than having to dial the digits," he said. Matt Dorros, of Simi Valley, questioned whether any change was needed. He said phone companies hoard prefixes that, if used properly, could extend the life of the current 805 indefinitely. "I have counted an unbelievable number of ghost prefixes in the 805," he said, referring to numbers allegedly not assigned to anyone. Cocke said a system of checks and balances is aimed at preventing any hoarding. He said phone and cable companies have to prove a legitimate need for new prefixes. He said many of the so-called ghost prefixes are likely used for machine-to-machine communication, including Wi-Fi connections, faxes, medical devices and alarm systems. Others at the public hearing asked about language barriers in making sure the county's Mixteco population is aware of the changes coming in 2018. Brenda Birdwell, of the Braille Institute, asked officials to consider the importance of phones to people without sight. "It is their lifeline to the community," she said. A public hearing on the area code was also held in Santa Barbara Monday night with a session scheduled for Tuesday morning in San Luis Obispo. The next step will be the formal application for an area code before the public utilities commission. That could happen later this year with a decision by the commission possible by the middle of next year.
