ham radio balloon experiment students

Today the PAPA system was "taken over" by people trying to locate a science balloon experiment that they believed landed inside the inner loop of the Chuckwalla Raceway race track. It had a beacon on it that they were using to triangulate its location. This was their 6th launch. They launched from Lake Forest. It got my attention so I asked about it and the net controller told me to check out scienceheads.org. See below for two neat videos - in the second one you can use your mouse to change your vantage point (look up at the balloon or the parachute after balloon pops, look down a the earth, etc). From the The ARRL Letter for February 18, 2021: Former ARRL Southwestern Division Director Art Goddard, W6XD, of Costa Mesa, California, died on February 13. An ARRL Life Member, he was 78. I didn't see any information on what caused his passing. RIP Art!!!

This expanded eligibility means that local health care providers, pharmacies, hospitals, and Public Health vaccination sites can open appointments to those 65+ once vaccines become available to them. Vaccine supplies are still very limited and health care providers are simultaneously ensuring those that received a first dose will also be able to receive a second dose. Appointments will be very limited. "We ask that until vaccine supply increases, the community allow those at greatest risk for exposure and serious health outcomes, to make their vaccine appointments first," said Van Do-Reynoso, Director of the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. "The entire community will have the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and work toward the community as a whole being safe from the risks of the virus." Just under 6,000 doses of vaccine are expected to arrive in Santa Barbara County next week, the vast majority of which are slated for second doses. Approximately 11,000 second doses will be administered in the next two weeks. Santa Barbara County currently has over 40,000 residents between the ages of 65-74 years old. Appointments will likely become available through health care providers and pharmacies, before they become available at Public Health vaccination sites. "We are excited to open appointments to vulnerable community members to have their first access to the vaccine" said, Dr. Do-Reynoso. "We are continuing to make progress in vaccine administration based on the maximum allocation Santa Barbara County is able to request from the state." These next few weeks will be a time of transition for vaccine distribution as we await further clarification from the State about the move to a Third-Party Administrator (TPA). There will be local changes in the way vaccine is administered and more information will be shared as it is known. Volunteer Opportunity: Community Vaccination Clinic

View this email in your browser Volunteer Opportunity: Community Vaccination Clinic Cottage Health is in need of volunteers to assist with its drive-though community vaccination clinics. Volunteers who assist with the effort may be eligible to receive the vaccine. There are openings for SBARC members to assist with event support, logistics and registration. This is a great opportunity for us to continue our mission to provide public service to the community, particularly during this disaster. In the short term, volunteers are needed for drive-though clinics at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital this Thursday 1/21 and Friday 1/22 as well as next Thursday 1/28 and Friday 1/29. Volunteers are asked to sign up for either full-days 07:30-16:30 or half-days mornings or afternoons. Additional clinics will be scheduled in the weeks ahead as vaccine availability permits. I’m with you there. I’m trying to channel Hiram Maxim. I think his response would be for us all to be eager and willing partners with the FCC to prevent and report unlawful use of our bands in regard to the current situation. Avon Stersic SK

I got a call from Chuck Stersic, N6CJL (expired license) this afternoon, and he let me know is wife, Avon, had passed away last week. I doubt many current SBARC members will know, let alone remember either of them. He was a member of the Elks, and helped SBARC a number of times get the use of the Elks grove and parking lot for the SBARC Hamfest. After Avon moved up to the Fresno area, Chuck stayed here for a few years before joining here.
