John Stewart W6GTI was fist licensed in 1922 and was our second oldest ham in Santa Barbara. He recently passed away after a long illness. Does anyone know his family? Stories about him? Hi all, Just a reminder that tomorrow, Saturday August 10th, will be the SBARC ARDF Hunt. We will have a NewsPress reporter present and would like to have a good turnout. Thanks, and see you tomorrow! ---------------------- SBARC ARDF Hunt Saturday, August 12, 2000 The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club will be sponsoring another Southern California On-Foot ARDF hunt in conjunction with the SBARC Hamfest and Communications Fair. ARDF (Amateur Radio Direction Finding), also called Radio Orienteering, is a timed event where 5 transmitters are hidden and competitors use radio direction finding equipment to locate them. This free informal event will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2000 at Lake Los Carnaros Park in Goleta, CA. Bring your two-meter hand-held or scanner plus a portable beam and attenuator if you have them. A limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan.. Training is available starting at 9:30am and is highly recommended for those people not familiar with this type of direction finding. A hamburger BBQ will follow (reservations requested.) Location - This event will take place at Lake Los Carnaros and will start at the Stow House Parking Lot just off of Los Carnaros Road. From US 101 about 1 mile north of Goleta, take the Los Carnaros exit and head north about ¼ mile and turn right into the parking lot.There should be plenty of free parking. Transmitters - There will be five transmitters, each transmitting on 146.565 MHz in round robin style for 1 minute each. Each transmitter will be identified by an Orange/White Orienteering control flag. There may also be an 80M practice transmitter. Course - Maps of the area will be available at a scale of 2500:1. The course itself will be between 2 miles and 3 miles and can easily be completed by walking in well under the 2 hour time limit. Transmitters will be at least 200 yards from each other. Classes - Beginner and Advanced. Teams will be allowed with the condition that only one DF unit be used per team and the people on the team stay together. Schedule of Events 9:30 am - 10:00 am - Training 10:00 am - Registration Opens 10:30 am - Competition Starts 1:00 pm - Hamburger BBQ, $3.00 per person Reservations requested for BBQ For more information, contact Marvin Johnston, KE6HTS, at 805-687-8881 or marvin(a)rain.org. September! It's that time again... 3rd annual Hamfest Vacaville, CA--Sept 2, 8 AM to 12 PM Western States Weak Signal Society, SideWinders on Two, and the Vaca Valley Radio Club present a Saturday Morning Hamfest at 7372 Paddon Rd., Vacaville, CA 95688... Off of either I-80 or I-505 go west on Midway Rd turning Right onto Paddon Rd... Third Driveway on the right... Talk in on 441.150 with a 77 PL... Also will try and listen on 144.200 with directions on 144.210. Amateur Swap not Computers. Bring a lawn chair and plenty of fun... I have camping room for those wishing to drive up the night before and the City of Vacaville has numerous new motels at the intersection of I-505 and I-80 just 5 miles away... There are two commerical camping centers just one mile away on Midway. Let me know if any specific are needed... Lots of goodies again this year... I would like to get this issue to Lorin on August 1 or 2 so it will get out a little earlier than normal for a bit more hamfest publicity. It is also time for the Nomination Committee to be formed, any announcements for Klix? We always need photos for inclusion in Klix; either prints or digital format is fine. If digital, the resolution should be about 200 DPI minimum. The resolution can be higher, but it will be reduced to about 200 DPI when it is put into Klix. We are still looking for additional Key-Klix editors. I have two more issues (August, November) and I will be done. I had not planned on doing the October issue as I will be preparing for the China World ARDF Championships. Anything else I've missed? Marvin

Brown Converter

Hi, Can anyone let me know what this thing is/does? The label on the unit says "Brown Converter for Continuous Balance System" and the unit itself is about 2" in diameter, 5" tall, and has 6 pins on the bottom that looks like it plugs into a socket. The manufacturer was Brown Instru. Div. of Minneapolis-Honeywell. Thanks.
