Memorial Services for Desi

Next on-foot transmitter hunt 11/10 at Bonelli Park

The next southern California on-foot transmitter hunt will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Bonelli Regional Park. As usual, this event will have something for everyone, beginner and expert alike. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Experts will be on hand to teach you the basic techniques of on-foot radio direction-finding (RDF). If you are a beginner, there will be entry-level two-meter fox transmitters, set by Joe Moell K0OV. For advanced radio-orienteers, there will be an international-rules ARDF course, set by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. An optional 80-meter fox transmitter will also be on the air. Expect to see some of the medal winners from the 2007 USA/IARU-R2 ARDF Championships that took place near South Lake Tahoe in mid-September. Some of them are training for the 2008 World Championships in South Korea. Transmitter hunting begins at 10 AM. You may start at any time up until 1 PM. Courses close at 3 PM. There are picnic tables and BBQ grills nearby, so you can bring your lunch or cook up something if you wish. The beginner course and the 80-meter transmitter hunt will be free of charge. The advanced ARDF training will use electronic registration/scoring ("e-punch") so a $5 per entry (individual or group) donation is requested for that course to defray the cost of the full-color orienteering map and e-punch equipment. Trails are primitive in some areas of the park, so wear sturdy shoes. All ages are welcome, but young children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Bonelli Regional Park is near Raging Waters, Brackett Field, and Puddingstone Reservoir. From the 57/210 freeways, take the Via Verde exit and go east through the entrance to the park. There is a per-vehicle entry fee, so consider carpooling. Go approximately 1/4 mile beyond the entrance and turn left into the parking lot for the bike rental stand. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag directing you to the starting site. A map to the site is at <www.homingin.com>. If you have them, bring a handi-talkie, receiver, or scanner covering the two-meter band for each person who will be going ARDFing. If you have directional antennas, attenuators, or other on-foot RDF equipment, be sure to bring it too. Make sure all batteries are fresh. For those with no radio gear, some extra ARDF receiver/antenna sets will be available. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. For map plotting, bring your own compass, protractor and pencil. This was forwarded to me by a friend in Colorado, and is quite interesting! Marvin, KE6HTS HAM RADIO PROMOTION: MGM FILM PRESENTS "RADIO HAMS" A film from Metro Goldwyn Mayer that promotes Amateur Radio has surfaced on the Internet. Produced in 1939 by Pete Smith, "Radio Hams" centers on a family called to dinner. All but the teenage son respond. When family members go looking for him, one by one they are snared into a world of ham radio high adventure. One that includes a rescue in Alaska and a tragic search for a downed aircraft at sea. Unlike most films promoting ham radio, this one is not a documentary. It's a fully scripted 10 minute dramatic presentation featuring a cast of professional actors well directed by Felix Fiest. E. Mauriece Adler is credited with writing the screen play. "Radio Hams" is really a nostalgic look back at ham radio, the way it never was. IRLP node

Bill, Shaw, others who may have answers: You request abuse of the node, so I just did my best, monopolizing it for about an hour to join a net on the Japan reflector. I noticed a couple of things I had not heard on IRLP operation before: 1. There appeared to be a pretty aggressive time out alligator. I'm not sure where the timer in question is, at K6TZ or on the remote node, which was a complex of IRLP, WIRES, and patched in HF. It was as short as 30 sec or as long as a minute or more. Audio simply stops and a second later the carrier drops but without the "beebeeboop" remote courtesy tone. I was able to key TZ, but it did not relay any remote audio until the timer (wherever it is) was reset by the transmitting station standing by. My question, then, is how is the timer configured locally? 2. Probably related to #1: periodically, a local announcement, "3, 30 seconds received" comes on and covers up the remote audio. I was unable to discern a relation between actual length of remote transmission prior to hearing this announcement, or the dropping of the carrier after the announcement. Can you clarify this one, too? Great work in keeping the repeater and the IRLP node up. What is the elevation of the 440 node? IRLP UP

TZ-446.400 IRLP should be up and running as of this morning would appreciate if people can use & abuse it a little, and let me know if there are any problems. Im specifically looking for feedbacks on audio level to/from the remote nodes, and audio quality. I have temporarily set low RF transmit timeout for inbound traffic from remote will fix it in a week or so. Also please help keep an ear on the 446.400 system to make sure it hasnt gone haywire. For those of you not familiar with IRLP, the 30-second usage tutorial (minus the rules/convention/etiquette blurbs) -- To connect to the remote node: 1. Look up destination 4-digit node number at <http://status.irlp.net/>http://status.irlp.net 2. Touch tone the 4-digit node (FYI: our K6TZ node is 3673) To disconnect from the remote node: 1. Touch tone 73 -Shaw Takeuchi
