Expert predicts wireless traffic jam RAY ESTRADA, NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT February 18, 2011 12:00 AM A South Coast radio communications expert said Wednesday the nation may soon surpass its capacity to handle all its wireless devices. Andrew Seybold discussed bandwidth limitations at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion at the MIT Central Coast Forum attended by some 100 people, including Mayor Helene Schneider. Mr. Seybold, a Santa Barbara resident, is one of the mobile wireless industry's top experts for strategic consulting, research and analysis. "I am very concerned that we're going to run out of bandwidth," Mr. Seybold said. "By 2012 we may exceed capacity. We may be out of bandwidth next year." He said 96 percent of the U.S. population uses a wireless voice device while 86 percent use some other type of wireless device. And, he said, 50 percent of the streaming traffic is video, which uses a great deal of bandwidth at one time. Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. The Federal Communication Commission regulates bandwidth and sells it to communications companies. Mr. Seybold contends the spectrum on which bandwidth can be used is about full. Today's array of wireless devices includes everything from e-books to global positioning devices and even some dog collars, he said. "We can't create more bandwidth," he said. "We need to get away from what we are doing on the Internet." For example, using browsers on smartphones is not a good idea because of all the bandwidth it uses, he said. "Wireless data consumes much more than a phone call," he said. To provide broadband to more people, "It's not about technology; it's not about building more networks," Mr. Seybold said. "It's about economics." Eventually, he said, communication companies will have to create a subscription-type system to mete out bandwidth per family. It might be similar to how residents of a certain area pay for utilities such as gas and electricity. Not everyone on the forum's panel of experts agreed with Mr. Seybold. Henry Baker, an MIT engineer, said the issue is not the amount of bandwidth remaining, but how it all can be used more efficiently. But another panelist believes Mr. Seybold's views are correct. "It's no exaggeration," said panelist Bob Fasulkey, vice president of engineering for Digital West Networks, Inc. Other panelists included Jay Hennigan, one of the founders of one of the first ISPs in the Central Coast and now director of Network Engineering at Impulse Advanced Communications. Mr. Seybold and his colleagues agreed that more efficient use of bandwidth would expand its use. However, they said the "latency" issue might prevent that since the quality of communications might be diminished. Despite sounding an alarm about the issue, Mr. Seybold expressed some optimism about the government's ability to deal with the problem. Mr. Seybold said the Obama administration has addressed the issue of bandwidth and several bills have been introduced in Congress. "I think the FCC will find what we need," he said. Mr. Seybold also stressed the need for more cell sites -- antenna arrays that allow wireless communications devices to operate better. The number of South Coast cell sites will triple in the next three years, but some communities such as Montecito are opposed to adding any more, he said. "Cell site growth since 1997 has been great," Mr. Seybold said, "but it's moving very slowly now because everybody says, 'Not in my backyard.' " In Santa Barbara County, Mr. Seybold said, it takes more than two years to obtain government approval for a cell site, which costs about $250,000 to build. e-mail: news(a)newspress.com

ANTHONY, Romuald (KI6CI) Obituary February 13, 2011 12:05 PM ANTHONY, Romuald (December 17, 1917 - December 28, 2010). Rom was born in Chicago, Illinois of immigrant parents. His father died early in his life and was raised for several years by his single mother and was required to leave high school to go to work. During the deep depression he attended and paid his way through YMCA Evening High School to obtain his education and was admitted to University of Chicago where he graduated in 1944 with a B.S. in Physics. Rom came to California in 1945 to work for the Naval Ordinance Test Station in China Lake in optical instrumentation and research. Following his work with the NOTS, he entered private industry and created the Infra Red and Optical Laboratory at Convair in San Diego. Later Rom was General Manager for Photo-Research in Hollywood and finally came to Santa Barbara with Electro-Optical Industries until his retirement in 1998 at the age of 81. Rom participated in community activities to encourage high school students in their pursuit of careers in science, music and the arts. In San Diego, as Vice-president of the committee for San Diego Hall of Science and Industry, he created the Meet the Junior Scientist group. Later Rom was the General Chairman of an Arts Festival in Santa Monica, where he encouraged teen groups to present their talents playing kitchen utensils to create music. In Santa Barbara, he organized the annual High School Photographic Salon exhibitions. The exhibitions brought out 265 students participants. Rom enjoyed photography and was president of the Goleta Valley photo club for two years. His prints were exhibited in galleries in San Diego, the Channel Island National Park headquarters, in Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, and in New York. He was also an avid HAM radio operator with his wife, Barbara, and was on call to render emergency services in Santa Barbara area for fourteen years. Rom is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Barbara, his two children, Jean Pedersen of Ojai, CA, and Karl Anthony of Encinitas, CA, along with five grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. No services are scheduled at this time.

Hello SBARC Members and Friends, We're still looking for helpers at 2pm on Sunday. Drive yourself or carpool. Call me on 19/79 at about 1:45pm or on the phone at 805-637-0985. My email will only be read until about 10:30am. You're help will speed up getting the two-way link going again to the Amateur Television Network. Today (Sunday) at 2pm, I'm taking a few helpers up to the Santa Barbara ATV Repeater site on Gibraltar Road to work on several tasks. My main goals are 1) to get a usable signal on 5.8 GHz from Oxnard and 2) to hook up the 315' 7/8" hard line to the 10' grid antenna pointing at Santiago Peak. The latter will set the stage for our 2.4 GHz talk-back. Hopefully, that will be up and running soon. I need someone to bring a dolly (or two) that we can use to move the double-wide outdoor rack. Advance Notice - Santa Maria Swapfest

Dennis (WB6OBB) and I went to the SARC (Satellite Amateur Radio Club) yesterday to find out more about the Santa Maria Swapfest. The rumors were true ... the SwapFest is returning to the Newlove picnic grounds. Some of you might remember when the attendance was upwards of 1000 people, and it was a highly anticipated event. A large group from the Santa Barbara/Ventura area would meet for breakfast at Ellen's in Buellton about 7AM before the swapfest and fill up the back room. And then spend the day checking out the "stuff" for sale before heading back home, sometimes with a full load. An effort is being made to bring back those times, and I am excited to be a part of it. There will be a transmitter hunt, and preceeding I will be putting on an antenna clinic. The clinic will be an opportunity to build a t-hunting antenna and get some practice on transmitter hunting techniques. At this point, the information on the SARC website is outdated, but the updated information is expected to be on the site in the next week or so. http://www.satellitearc.com/ There will be a way to pre-register and save some money on the selling spots and BBQ.
