Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in setting up the volunteer registration, I had to deal
with a confluence of health and technical issues.
2022 Wings Over Camarillo
I have not heard anything to the contrary, so I assume that everything will
be the same, i.e. free entrance to the show, parking, hat, pancake
breakfast, lunch, and all the water and soft drinks you can drink
Stroll through the show and provide eyes/ears/comms
Same as last year, we have the show director shadow, which should be a
very exciting close-up assignment, you will have two radios: a commercial
show radio and your ham radio. The Shadow will follow the show director and
provide communication support. You are welcome to sign up for two
consecutive Shadow shifts and stay with the show director for the entire
day.
Unless you are stationed at the comm trailer, plan on a lot of walking for
four hours in the hot August sun.
Bring your HT, headset/earpiece, a yellow shirt, communications vest (if
you have one) hat, sunscreen, water, etc
The Ham Radio assignments are password protected, click on the following
link which includes the password:
*https://woc.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=63328&&job_password=ham73*
<https://woc.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=63328&&job_password=ham73>
If you somehow end up at the top-level public landing page
https://woc.volunteerlocal.com click on the "Sign up now" link, which will
take you to the signup form, then enter *ham73* in the password field and
click Submit
Please do not share the password publicly as there are lots of nasty
disruptive people out there :-(
But do feel free to forward this to any ham operator club or group (SBARC,
ARESLAX, etc)
The instructions on the signup site are "generic", most do not apply to us,
so please follow these instructions to sign up:
1- *MAKE SURE* to click on the "*view description*" as there are important
assignment specific notes in there! Please do not sign up for a walking
assignment if you cannot walk in the hot August sun.
2- Check off your desired assignment (or assignments, as long as they are
not both AM or PM shifts, note that I disabled "overlap check" since
schedules do overlap by an hour, you may still sign up for both AM and PM
shifts)
*NOTE: *only the currently* OPEN AVAILABLE *assignments are shown by the
system, if you do not see a desired assignment, it means that it was taken
If you cannot sign up for any other time slot/assignment, please contact
me, and I'll see if I can arrange a swap.
*NOTE: *the "gate" position can be an "add on" assignment for a color or a
rover, it entails coming in early and sitting at Gate 7 for about two hours
to check-in ham volunteers, then over to the comm trailer for the briefing
and to your primary assignment
3- Scroll down to the bottom or the form
4- Fill in your email, name, phone
5- The *call sign* field should automagically show up after you check a
"Ham Radio" job checkbox (and other unrelated fields should disappear)
6- Select "*Avi Carmi K6AVI*" for Job Captain and "*Ham Radio Operators*"
for the Group/Organization from the respective pulldown lists. These are
required fields, but not enforced, so please be sure to select.
7- Fill in your birthdate if under 18 (don't you wish?)
8- Then check the box and fill your name under the waiver
9- And finally, click the "*Sign Up To Volunteer*" button
You should receive a confirmation email, unfortunately, it will come from
Stephen, the show's volunteer coordinator, not me. (also I do not get any
notification that anyone signed up, only he does...)
A generic map, our sector map, and the parking permit *WILL SOON BE*
available on your volunteer profile page which is accessible by clicking
the "Check your status here" button on https://woc.volunteerlocal.com
or go to
https://woc.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/self_check.php
I will send more detailed directions/instructions prior to the show, but if
you have any questions/concerns/comments, please let me know
73,
-avi

More than 70 veterans spanning from World War II to the Vietnam War took
off Monday morning for a whirlwind tour of memorials in Washington, D.C.
Honor Flight of the Central Coast
<https://www.honorflightccc.org/>marked its first-ever charter flight,
the largest group, and the inauguralSanta Maria Public
Airport<http://www.santamariaairport.com/>departure since the program
began 10 years ago.
“This is exciting for Santa Maria, because now we’re tripling the number
of vets we can take at one time,” said Jay Conner, a Central Coast Honor
Flight board member. “It’s just an amazing group.”
Veterans climbed aboard theAllegiant
Air<http://www.allegiantair.com/>charter flight after 10 a.m. Monday for
the trek to the East Coast, with the aircraft departing after theSanta
Maria Fire
Department<https://www.cityofsantamaria.org/city-government/departments/fire-services>provided
a dramatic water cannon over the plane.
This week’s mission marked the inaugural use of a charter flight,
meaning the group will travel directly to Baltimore, Maryland, avoiding
any delays involved in having to transfer planes.
This was the program’s first time at the Santa Maria airport after
previous Central Coast Honor Flights left from and returned to the San
Luis Obispo Airport.
“Everybody’s been phenomenal at the airport,” Conner said of the Santa
Maria airport’s personnel. “They’re excited about it.”
The Tour of Honor group includes two World War II veterans, four from
the Korean War and 68 from the Vietnam War. Some of the guardians acting
as escorts also had served in the military.
The Santa Maria Elks Lodge hosted Honor Flight veterans and guardians
earlier this month at a preflight luncheon.

Previously, those luncheons numbered 50, but for this trip they hosted
more than 250 people.
While they needed one bus for prior Honor Flight trips, they will have
three buses this time.
“Everything is three times as many,” Conner said.
After spending Monday night in Baltimore, the group will begin tours of
various memorials built as a tribute to their service through the years.
While veterans fly for free, escorts and guardians, who normally are
younger family members or friends, pay approximately $1,500.
“They’re giving that veteran the honor to be their guardian,” said
Conner, who helps veterans by pushing wheelchairs or providing other
assistance as needed.
“You’re helping escort the veteran because it’s their event. It’s their
tour,” Conner said.
After pausing Honor Flight missions due to the pandemic, Conner said the
larger aircraft will allow the organization to make its way through the
waiting list.
Central Coast Honor Flight plans another trip this fall, but the dates
had not been set as of Monday.
“The most important thing that I can tell anybody that wants to go on it
is to go onHonorFlightCC.org <http://honorflightcc.org/>and fill out an
application, because if we don’t know you want to go, you’re not going
to go,” Conner said.
“You’ve got to fill out the application to get on the list.”

Hi all,
I sent this to some of you a couple weeks ago but I think the main SBARC listserv was not working at the time so I am resending it now.
I was on TWiT Network’s FLOSS Weekly webcast with Doc Searls this week talking a bit about ham radio and SBARC’s initiatives for data gathering around Santa Barbara County in the context of open source.
Here's a link to the recording: https://twit.tv/shows/floss-weekly/episodes/724?autostart=false
