2022 Wings Over Camarillo - Call for volunteers.

Hi all, Sorry for the delay in setting up the volunteer registration, I had to deal with a confluence of health and technical issues. 2022 Wings Over Camarillo I have not heard anything to the contrary, so I assume that everything will be the same, i.e. free entrance to the show, parking, hat, pancake breakfast, lunch, and all the water and soft drinks you can drink Stroll through the show and provide eyes/ears/comms Same as last year, we have the show director shadow, which should be a very exciting close-up assignment, you will have two radios: a commercial show radio and your ham radio. The Shadow will follow the show director and provide communication support. You are welcome to sign up for two consecutive Shadow shifts and stay with the show director for the entire day. Unless you are stationed at the comm trailer, plan on a lot of walking for four hours in the hot August sun. Bring your HT, headset/earpiece, a yellow shirt, communications vest (if you have one) hat, sunscreen, water, etc The Ham Radio assignments are password protected, click on the following link which includes the password: *https://woc.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=63328&&job_password=ham73* <https://woc.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=63328&&job_password=ham73> If you somehow end up at the top-level public landing page https://woc.volunteerlocal.com click on the "Sign up now" link, which will take you to the signup form, then enter *ham73* in the password field and click Submit Please do not share the password publicly as there are lots of nasty disruptive people out there :-( But do feel free to forward this to any ham operator club or group (SBARC, ARESLAX, etc) The instructions on the signup site are "generic", most do not apply to us, so please follow these instructions to sign up: 1- *MAKE SURE* to click on the "*view description*" as there are important assignment specific notes in there! Please do not sign up for a walking assignment if you cannot walk in the hot August sun. 2- Check off your desired assignment (or assignments, as long as they are not both AM or PM shifts, note that I disabled "overlap check" since schedules do overlap by an hour, you may still sign up for both AM and PM shifts) *NOTE: *only the currently* OPEN AVAILABLE *assignments are shown by the system, if you do not see a desired assignment, it means that it was taken If you cannot sign up for any other time slot/assignment, please contact me, and I'll see if I can arrange a swap. *NOTE: *the "gate" position can be an "add on" assignment for a color or a rover, it entails coming in early and sitting at Gate 7 for about two hours to check-in ham volunteers, then over to the comm trailer for the briefing and to your primary assignment 3- Scroll down to the bottom or the form 4- Fill in your email, name, phone 5- The *call sign* field should automagically show up after you check a "Ham Radio" job checkbox (and other unrelated fields should disappear) 6- Select "*Avi Carmi K6AVI*" for Job Captain and "*Ham Radio Operators*" for the Group/Organization from the respective pulldown lists. These are required fields, but not enforced, so please be sure to select. 7- Fill in your birthdate if under 18 (don't you wish?) 8- Then check the box and fill your name under the waiver 9- And finally, click the "*Sign Up To Volunteer*" button You should receive a confirmation email, unfortunately, it will come from Stephen, the show's volunteer coordinator, not me. (also I do not get any notification that anyone signed up, only he does...) Looks like 2X 4-1000’s for RF modulated by 2X 4–1000.; could be (2 x 2) 4-400’s; hard to tell from the photo. That’s similar to what I had when in N. Hollywood (K6SVQ) where I built w/ the help my HS electric shop teacher & a HAM neighbor RF engineer from Hughes AC. Drove the RF stage w/ a Viking II and the modulator (4 810’s); yes AM days, w/ an old Hi-Fi amp, by replacing the output transformer. The HV transformer was from a pole pig supplied by a friend of my Dad's from L.A. Dept. of Water & Power & the modulation transformer was army surplus I found in an army-navy store in San Fernando. The plate transformer (w/o oil-filled case) resided in a plastic barrel outside the shack because there was no room for it inside as the shack was a 5’ x 12’ storage room off the garage w/ the big PA & PS in a rack at one end of the room, a Viking desk KW in the middle against the long wall and the other small end was the op. stn. w/ a Gonset GSB-100, Halicraft SX-101A, borrowed Collins 75S1, etc. Yes there was room only for one person inside to sit. Antennas at that time was a HB 5-el 20M yagi @ 72’ & 5-el 15M yagi 10’ above that on an old guyed Tristao crank-up. Note the rotor has a unique story of it’s own: When 15+, I was visiting an aunt & uncle in Long Beach and there was a 60’ telephone pole w/ a 3-el 20 & a 3-el 10 yagi over a “strange looking box” on top of the pole. I knocked on the door and the woman who answered said that the pole and antennas were of the previous owner and they had no means of removing it. I asked if I removed the pole and antennas could I have it. She called her husband and they both said YES as long as we did no damage to their property. I brought my Dad (general contractor) over to look and he was skeptical but said maybe. Note, at that time I had a DX35, an HQ-100 and a Gotham 3-el 15M yagi on a telescoping push-up 30’ mast that I rotated w/ a pipe wrench. Well, the next week my Dad told me he’d supply two laborers to do the work and the following Saturday, my Dad, his two guys & I went to LB, removed the two antennas, the “strange box” (an E.F. Johnson rotor) and cut down the pole in 2’ pieces w/ a chain saw. Years later I sold that rotor for $1000 to a guy in Palos Verdes. You can see the same model rotor as you drive by on the 405 S. adjacent to Olympic Blvd; what used to be Henry Radio! The 10M yagi was 6-el on another old guyed 54’ tower w/o any mfg. identified that I had bought for $40 from a junk yard. Some of the tower guy wires were tied to the bases of LA Dept, of W & P poles. (Note: I had the W & P noise guy out multiple times who arranged for spraying of HV insulators on the poles in the area and there was never a word of complaint from anybody in the crews.) For 40M, I had two phased verticals, base loaded, elevated 10’ off ground in trees w/ relays to switch orientation from broadside to end-fire. 80M had two dipoles, each fed at the top of the 72’ tower sloping to trees w/ a NE/SW or NW/SE orientation relay at the apex. After high school & the first two years of college, I was married, lived in an apt. in Van Nuys and had sold off all the antennas, towers, the big PA & radios. After completing college, had a design engineering job @ Ocean Technology & we bought a tri-level house in Northridge, got emersed in water skiing, sailing, & 2 children. When bussing of children began we moved to SB and ultimately got re-involved w/ HAM radio. Incredible rainfall rate very early Sunday morning

Saturday's rain for me in Ventura did not start falling at measurable quantities until 8pm. By midnight we got 0.7". Very early Sunday morning, I could hear it dumping outside for a while but I was all cozy in my bed so I didn't get up. Was very surprised to see the total of Saturday and Sunday of 3.04" !! Much higher than anyone near me on the automated rainfall website got. I have a cup style 'manual' rain gauge on a fence that I use to verify what my automated rain gauge says, and it too showed the same amount. Take a look at the rate of rain I got. 1.6" rainfall rate an hour! Incredible! Dave AI6VX [image: image.png]
