Repeater Operation During Fire Event

Good morning all, We have turned on the “double beep” courtesy tone on the main club repeater on 146.79. This is referred to as the “Event” tone. This means there is an event of some sort in progress. For today, December 13th and until the Thomas Fire event has passed, we will remain in this mode. Here’s what this means: The priority use of the repeater should be for fire related information. If you are traveling about throughout the day, you are encouraged to report relevant information, inquire about current conditions, and of course ask for radio checks as necessary. You are welcome to use the repeater for brief traffic. But please… 1) Listen for 30 seconds or so and yield to other priority traffic in progress 2) Announce your call sign and ask if there is any pending traffic before proceeding 3) Please keep your traffic brief and go to another repeater if you can. Here are some alternatives: WB6OBB Repeater: 147.000 PL 131.8 plus KD6OVS Repeater: 147.700 PL 131.8 minus K6TZ and PAPA DMR Repeaters At the present time, the following SBARC repeaters are linked to the main 2m repeater on 146.79: K6TZ 70cm 446.400 K6TZ 6m 51.820 K6TZ 1.25m 224.08 can be linked when required The fire is slowly progressing towards the populated areas of Montecito and Santa Barbara. As it does, orderly communications practices will become more important. In addition to our members and other local hams, there are many members of the general public that monitor our repeater frequency on their scanners. It is important to remember that in conditions like these, what we say and how we act on the repeater can reflect on how the public perceives SBARC and amateur radio in general. Please keep in mind that people may be making calls with important traffic from difficult areas and only have a brief period of time where they can reach the repeater. Keeping the frequency as clear as possible will help ensure we are able to receive that traffic. This is the perfect time to practice our emergency communications skills. Fire Map

Hi All, I have seen this map shown on the web and twitter numerous times and finally found where it is generated.This map is uses satellite and remote sensors for data and is used by the agencies fighting the fire to analyze conditions and identify hotspots and areas of rapid spread. It has some interesting layers that you can turn on (icon in upper right corner that looks like a stack of paper) to see smoke patterns, wind, humidity, etc. I was surprised to see that my K6BPM weather station is included in the map! https://firemap.sdsc.edu -- Brian - K6BPM

Minutes from mornings briefing. About 45 people in attendance Conference call with lots of others Meeting started at 9:01am Lewin starts: Safety briefing Exits/First Aid in kitchen/ AED in hallway Current Situation: Until last night SB was only care and support of Ventura As of last night fire became a threat to SB Law and fire are now part of unified command SB is now directly involved “Voluntary evacuation” was issued for Carp as a result. Maps and Plans available for that 2-3 am there was a need for a portion of Rincon to be evacuated Sheriff's deputies went door to door 300 residents and 90 homes were impacted They were directed to UCSB (something about animals) Now: First time to activate this center (did I hear that right?) Director of EOC is now on shifts Brian Yule(?) is section chief Going around the room pointing out the roles in the organization right now. Chief Peterson: Fire briefing: Huddle with a 3-star at CalFire Acreage is not clear 150,000 acres estimate now 101 is closed. CHP is shuttling small groups of cars through. “Escort” Fire is behind Carpinteria (as far as SB cares) Fire has reached “divide peak”, further inland behind carp Between ventura and SB counties If true fire is much further into federal lands than we realized earlier this morning County and Ops strike team at La Conchita kept structure lost to minimum. Lost two buildings (1 outbuilding and 1 abandoned) This was managed well Forest Service is concerned about the amount of fire is in their protection area. Trying to resolve how the teams are going to cooperate. Good communication. What kind of 1800's thinking is this code? How do they become so elite as to not have to tell the members what truly is going on. I believe that the concept of freedom of speech is indeed gone in the BOD for ARRL. Contrast this with SBARC and most non-profits where the board meetings are open to the membership and even the public. All of section 8 is particularly onerous. A board member's constituency may request an issue be brought before the board. The member argues in favor of his or her constituency and gets voted down. That member can't acknowledge that he tried. He can't say how he voted. He must go back to those who elected him and lie that he favors the actions of the Board against those that elected him, or at least pretend that he supports the Board. In my opinion, this stinks to high heaven. How can we as the members make an informed choice to elect representatives if they are barred from telling us how they represent us and how they vote and are forced to pretend that all is rosy in Newington? He got a standing ovation. The rest of the audience agreed with him. As per the new code, we as members are prohibited from knowing how our representatives voted. I certainly hope that this results in a major Streisand Effect problem for the League.
