145.160 PL change

QST QST QST The K6TZ 145.160 Repeater operating from Santa Ynez Peak has undergone two major changes this week. The antenna was relocated to a mast with a lower noise floor. In addition both input and output PL are now 127.3 Hz. The repeater system will be on-link with wd6eby at Sulphur Mountain in Ventura County. Would appreciate low level input signal reports and area of coverage. More later as we move forward. Bill Talanian Trustee

Icom IC-7300 users out there?

Gigaparts, HRO and Main Trading all have a black Friday sale on the Icom IC-7300 ($999.95 after $100 rebate). Best part is the wife said I could get one :) Bad part is that I tend to over analyze things and sure enough I'm doing it with this radio. Question for the group - do any of you have firsthand experience with this radio especially in an environment with high noise (power lines mostly I think). I've read it doesn't do well in high noise environments and that's the thing that's keeping me from buying it. Dave ai6vx

Upcoming bylaws vote - dangerous precedent

There are two proposals on tonight's ballot. One is for the membership to approve a dues increase from $24 per year to $35 per year. I am in favor of this. It has been a very long time since the dues were raised, inflation has taken its toll, our systems are aging, and we have taken on many new projects. The other proposal is in my opinion far more dangerous, and I urge you to vote against it. As the Club is presently structured, the Board of directors sets the dues. This has been the case for several decades. Once the Board votes to change the dues, this change must be approved by the membership at a regular meeting. The proposed change to the bylaws removes the provision that the membership ratify any dues increase. Having the Club membership ratify dues increases is an important safeguard against a future Board that seeks to take on more than the membership can support and fund it on the backs of an unwilling membership. To the best of my knowledge, the membership has never failed to ratify any increase in dues presented in my 40-plus years of SBARC membership, so there should not be any need to change the bylaws removing this important protection. The Board asks that we trust them. The Board already sets the dues. This doesn't change that, but it removes the safeguard against unreasonable increases that we now enjoy. Ronald Reagan used to quote an old Russian proverb, "Trust, but verify". This proposed change removes your ability as members to verify. This Board may be reasonable, but future Boards may not. Even with this Board, I have evidence that there was an attempt to raise one member's dues even before the increase was to be voted on at tonight's meeting. Despite assurances that this would be corrected, the evidence shows that it has not been. This is a hint of what may happen in the future. Please vote to approve the dues increase. ARES Exercise

QST QST QST ARES will be conducting a county-wide communications exercise with the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Office of Emergency Management on Thursday, November 16, from 0800 to 1200 hours. (Set up will be at 0800 with comm checks around 0830. The drill itself will start at 0900 hours.) The 146.79 repeater will be used for south county operations and the 224.08 repeater will be linked to service all north county activity. The 446.4 repeater will be used for traffic between the EOC and the Public Health Department’s Department Operating Center. Linking between 146.79 and 145.18 will remain off to facilitate exercise communications. It is likely the operations will be concluded prior to 1200 hours. At the present time, they expect to have an open net until such time as the exercise begins, so an abbreviated SBARC morning net on 146.79 seems like it will not interfere. But space should be left between transmissions for emergency or exercise traffic. As soon as normal communications is restored at the hospitals, which is anticipated to be around 1100 hours, the net will either be terminated or put on open net status. Folks: Let me weigh in on this as it appears my simple message has been misconstrued and may have been taken as offensive. The ListServer is for communications between members and a common interest. There are 10 government holidays. Three of them are Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. There is absolutely nothing political in recognition of our common heritage but a patriotic reminder of those in SBARC who have given their life for our freedom. I know each and everyone who have long been forgotten. Would one be so offended if I were to post an American Flag and say, Have a Happy Fourth. I would hope not. At every SBARC general meeting in a public building we all stand and Pledge Allegiance to the Flag. Everyone stands and it is common to place ones hand over their heart. Hi Stephen- The purpose of the SBARC list server is to facilitate communication of members regarding Amateur radio and related activities. We discourage religious and/or political threads. SRD 2017 will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017, from 0000z to 2400z. Usually, Ventura County operates from early Saturday morning 7 AM to 4 PM. Much like Field Day, we set up portable stations at the Oxnard NWS office, and make as many contacts as possible. Unlike Field Day, repeaters, internet linking, and most communication methods are acceptable. SRD was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that SKYWARN volunteers make to the NWS mission, the protection of life and property. Amateur radio operators comprise a large percentage of the SKYWARN volunteers across the country. The official SRD web site will continue to be http://hamradio.noaa.gov <http://hamradio.noaa.gov/>. This site is still being updated for the 2017 event, so you will continue to see the 2016 information for a short time to come.
