US ARDF Championship Registration

Registrations are now being accepted for USA's annual championships of on-foot transmitter hunting, which will take place during the week and weekend after Memorial Day. The site will be the forests near Mt. Laguna Village, about 45 miles east of San Diego. Activities will get under way on Wednesday and Thursday, May 30 - 31, when an optional two-day "training camp" will take place. The official championships opening will take place on Friday, June 1 with practice and equipment testing sessions. The two-meter contest will take place on Saturday, June 2, after which all will gather for a banquet in the evening. Sunday's schedule includes the 80-meter contest and an awards ceremony, timed to end in mid-afternoon to accommodate those who must hurry home. Even if you have never competed in a formal ARDF event before, you are welcome at the USA and IARU Region 2 Championships. The courses will be open to all, beginner and expert alike, with or without a ham radio license. USA's best are expected to attend and they are always helpful to newcomers. The training camp is an outstanding opportunity and highly recommended for first-timers. National ARDF Championships are for individuals only. No teaming or assistance on the course is permitted. Participants are divided into six age categories for males and five age categories for females in accordance with standard IARU rules. Medals for first, second and third places will be awarded in each category on each band. The official event Web page at www.homingin.com has the registration form. It is important for participants to register right away. The organizers need an accurate head count and assurances that there will be sufficient attendees. It's also important to make reservations now if you want to stay at the event headquarters, which is Laguna Mountain Lodge. (Nearby camping is also available.) Transportation and lodging information is on the event Web page, as well as the daily schedule, competition rules, transmitter and map information. For questions and regular updates, you can subscribe to a group mailing list for participants and others interested in these championships. [ardf-socal] Reminder -- Next ARDF near Santa Barbara on Saturday

Southern California's next ARDF session will be Saturday, April 21 at Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. In addition to the beginner-to-intermediate level ARDF course, there will be a workshop for building measuring-tape antennas and attenuators. Contact Marvin Johnston by e-mail (marvin(a)west.net) if you want to reserve a kit. Kitbuilding and transmitter hunting start promptly at 9:30 AM. Hunters may start out on the courses at any time until 1 PM. Courses close at 2:30 PM. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. The building session and hunt start will be in the picnic area, just east of the railroad depot. SBARC Club Meeting for April 20, 2012 by Darryl Widman, KF6DI, SBARC Program Chairman SBARC on Santa Ynez Peak and Other Places with our own Bill Talanian, W1UUQ, Chairman SBARC Telecommunications Committee Up on the ladder is Steven Nelson, KD6VEX, one of the good guys who freely gives of his time and effort in behalf of Amateur Radio and the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club. Bill Talanian, W1UUQ, our Chairman of Telecommunications lives and breathes repeaters, mountain-tops, co-ordinating radio communications with public service agencies and setting up radio operations for these groups. It is fine people like this who continue to give the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club its good name. Bill can always be found, if you know where to look for him, planning, discussing, organizing, putting up and tearing down anything having to do with telecommunications in our general area. This Friday at our club meeting, you will find Bill in the front of the room telling us about what SBARC is up to regarding radio communications in our behalf (or someone else's) and is always anxious to answer questions in as much detail as he feels we can comprehend! Along that line, Bill is always looking for good, able-bodied folks to lend a hand, roll up their sleeves, help raise/lower structures for radio communications and, generally, get involved with getting good, clean signals from here to there. Come to our April 20, 2012 club meeting and learn more about what Bill and his team of good guys are up to lately. Please bring some goodies for the refreshment table. It will be appreciated. Remember that the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club holds its monthly club meetings at the Goleta Union School District, 401 No. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, right across the street from the Goleta Library. It all begins at 7:30 PM but come early to meet a whole lot of good people and also, see what others brought for the Free-To-Good-Home table. I came across this while learning more about Fourier analysis and thought it might a hidden gem, and less the article is less than a year old (Dec. 2011). The last section on ferrite loaded cavities, for variable resonance, especially caught my eye. ARDF Practice at Lake Carnaros

Southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunting session will be Saturday, April 21 at Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them! If you don't have the antenna/attenuator system for on-foot foxhunting on two meters with your ham radio handi-talkie or scanner, you can easily make one during this session. Marvin Johnston KE6HTS will conduct a clinic for building his kits for measuring-tape yagis and for 90 dB offset-type attenuators. An assembled/tested attenuator in a special housing that goes inside the boom of the yagi is also available. Contact Marvin by e-mail (marvin(a)west.net) for prices and to reserve your kits. It takes about an hour to put the kits together with tools and soldering irons that will be provided. If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry because there will be plenty of experts to help you. We want you to succeed! Then with your HT and the kitbuilt equipment, you will be all set to hunt. Kitbuilding and transmitter hunting start promptly at 9:30 AM. Hunters may start out on the courses at any time until 1 PM. Courses close at 2:30 PM. Besides some easy fox transmitters just to help you learn and test your equipment, there will be a beginner-level international-rules course. If you don't have any, just bring your handi-talkie or scanner and come early for the building session. If you can't do that, come anyway, because a limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Bring your own compass, protractor and pencil if you plan to use them for map marking. Make sure that all batteries are fresh. Weather: In case of rainy or very wet conditions, the event might be postponed. Check www.homingin.com before you set out to make sure that the event is a "go."
