Fascinating Presentation at Our November 18 SBARC Club Meeting
Cristian Paun, WV6N, a proud member of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, will honor us with a presentation on his very stealthy antennae that he has designed and uses at his home QTH in Lompoc.
Like many among us who live in nice neighborhoods but have to put up with Home Owner Association (HOA) rules and regulations regarding antennae, Cristian didn't take it sitting down. He has devised ways to get around those discriminating rules and still works lots of DX.
The loops shown above were featured in a paper written by WV6N that was published in the Nov 2011 issue of QST magazine. They are the only antennae at the WV6N QTH due to these HOA regulations.
Want to find out more about these antennae? Come to our November meeting and get the whole story.
Also at our November meeting, we will hold our annual Election of Officers and Directors for the year 2012. You may nominate yourself for a position on our board of directors or, with their willingness to serve the club for a year, nominate someone else at the club meeting.
November is also when we hold our annual Home-Brew Night. Bring your entry and let's see whose gets the most oohs and aahs.
Don't forget to bring some tasty goodies for the goodie table and also, rejoin SBARC for 2012 at the Membership Table with Harry, K6PDQ.
Our club meetings are held at the Goleta Union School District, 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, right across the street from the Goleta Library. Doors open at 6:45pm and the meeting begins at 7:30 pm. Come early and bring a friend.

Hello SBARC Members and Friends,
Tomorrow, Saturday 11/12/11, SBARC will once again provide communications
for the Santa Barbara International Marathon from about 7am to 1pm.
Thanks to the many of you who have volunteered to help.
(I think Rick might be able to use a little more help - contact
rickwhtr(a)cox.net)
I will be promoting SBARC in the lower parking lot of SBCC, near the
stadium. The location will be obvious because I'm showing off our wonderful
Rover.
Please stop by and say hello if you're in the area. If you feel like it,
I'd love to have you help me interact with the onlookers, telling them what
we're doing for the event and inviting them to join our
amateur radio ranks.
If you have something that would be good to hand out, either send it to me
by email or drop a few copies off tomorrow at the Rover.
Enjoy the event.

Subject: Radio operators for Santa Barbara International Marathon
11-4-2011
Fellow Hams,
I hope you can help us with this:
On Saturday, November 12, 2011 the
Santa Barbara International Marathon
will be held.
Rick, KG6VLB, and I are working on communications staffing.
FIVE THOUSAND runners are expected, including those from all 50 states
and 10 countries! A full marathon, half marathon and relay are involved.
This is a big event and the more Ham operators we can place the better.
Starting time on station is expected to be at 6:45am.
The event organizers appreciate the real-time and wide-area
coverage Amateur Radio provides and it gives us a chance
to show one aspect of our usefulness to the community.
A course map is included or you can visit http://www.sbimarathon.com/
for a map and more details.
Please let me know by return email if you will be able
to help with this important event.
Thanks, Cheers & 73,
Jim Allen, KF6HHX
P.S. If I have emailed you before about this event please excuse the
intrusion.
This email was sent by Joe Moell to the ARDF-SoCal listserver, and I'm
reposting here in case anyone on this list is interested.
The kits talked about are primarily the tape measure beam kit (if you
already have an attenuator) and the complete tape measure beam kit (if
starting from scratch) on my webpage at:
http://www.west.net/~marvin
I just checked the weather forecast, and it looks like the chances of
showers are primarily before 10AM.
Since this is primarily for people to get an introduction to transmitter
hunting on foot, I'll have a short three transmitter course set out
where I'll go out and show people the proper techniques to finding the
transmitters. I won't be finding them myself (I know where they will be)
but rather helping people to learn how to find them on their own.
The frequency for the 3 transmitter course will be on 144.525 MHz, and
the 5 transmitter course on 146.565 MHz.
Thanks!
Marvin, KE6HTS
****************************************
The forecast is for a 30% chance of a few showers in the Santa Barbara
are on Saturday, but we're still planning to have our ARDF session at
Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. Besides some easy fox transmitters
just to help you learn and test your equipment, there will be a
beginner-level international-rules course. The site area is slightly
less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for
foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one help to get
started, just ask. Full-color orienteering maps will be available.
If you don't already have the antenna/attenuator system for on-foot
foxhunting on two meters with your ham radio handi-talkie or scanner,
you can easily make it during this session. There will be a workshop
for building kits for measuring-tape yagis and for 90 dB offset-type
attenuators. If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry
because there will be plenty of experts to help you.
Kitbuilding and transmitter hunting is planned to start promptly at 9:30
AM. Hunters may start out on the courses at any time until 1 PM.
Courses close at 2:30 PM.
Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of
downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north
about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There
should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white
orienteering flag. The building session and hunt start will be in the
picnic area, just east of the railroad depot.
The Santa Barbara marathon takes place on this day, so Los Carneros Road
and its exit from the freeway may be closed until 10 AM or so. If that
happens, we'll just start a little later than planned.
Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater, 147.000(+) PL 131.8. A map
to the location is at www.homingin.com
