FYI from a newsgroup: "There were many ham nets up yesterday. LA DCS, LAFD ACS, DARN (ARES) etc. You can look up DCS, ACS DARN on the web for info and freqs. I did not see it but heard KNBC even stated yesterday when all the cell networks went down, that ham radio was still working. When all else fails, ham radio still works." ARDF Practice at Mt Pinos, August 23, 24

If anyone here in Santa Barbara would like to help out, please let me know. This last weekend was a lot of fun for everyone, and the tri-tip BBQ provided a great opportunity to talk and get to know each other better. The one thing I can use some help with is getting the transmitters put out as well as retrieved after each event. Because of a conflict with one of the US ARDF Team members, the dates have been changed for the next Mt Pinos ARDF practice to the fourth weekend in August, August 23 and 24. Because this conflicts with the all day hunt frequency, the 2M frequency will be changed to 145.565 MHz. Sorry for the duplicate/triplicate notice for those of you on several lists. It will be the same format as we used this past weekend ... but the courses will be different :). As we did on Saturday evening, we will have a tri-tip BBQ after the 2M Sprint. The cost will again be $5.00 for the maps and use of epunch equipment, and depending on how many people show up, $5.00 or so for the tri-tip BBQ. The schedule for the August 23, 24 events are as follows: Saturday, August 23 10:00AM - 2M Course (145.565 MHz) Saturday, August 23 3:00PM - 2M Sprint Practice (get one transmitter on each minute ... hopefully. 146.565) Saturday, August 23 6:00PM - Santa Barbara Style Tri-tip BBQ Sunday, August 24 9:30AM - 80M Course (3.579 MHz) There will be a 3 hour time limit for both the 2M and 80M courses. The starts for all courses will only be open long enough to get everyone started (about 35 minutes) so please, DO NOT BE LATE. We will be using epunch for both the 2M and 80M courses, and pin punch for the sprint practice. Unlike this last weekend, we should have beacon transmitters at the finish line. The 2M and 80M start location on Saturday and Sunday will be near the top parking lot, and the finish will again be at McGill Campground. We will meet at the Ski Patrol building at the top parking lot and walk to the start location. The Saturday afternoon 2M sprint so that each of the five transmitters would be found in each minute worked out pretty well, so we'll do that again. Only this time, the flags will be numbered and we'll probably use pin punch ... to help everyone get close enough to the flags to see what number they are :). If anyone needs an estick, there won't be any additional charge for borrowing one except for a $30.00 charge if you should lose or damage it. The Tri-tip BBQ will be held at the same location (Frazier Park County Park.) If the ban on charcoal/open fires is lifted (unlikely), we can hold it at McGill Campground. Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club 2008 Bazaar This Saturday This is the event that many of us have been waiting for. The Bazaar is where we play a great game of Musical Garages. Everyone has a chance to finally clear out all that wonderful junque that has been piling up. Even with all of our good intentions, we just never got around to building it, repairing it, modifying it or getting rid of it. Here is our chance. This event is a once-a-year happening and it is going to take place this Saturday morning, July 12, in the front yard of Marvin, KE6HTS. Marvin says that because of logistics, he just doesn't want to move all that great stuff from his place over to the Elks Lodge where we have held our Bazaars in the recent past. Marvin lives at 408 Grove Lane in Santa Barbara. His Zip code is 93105. How about just about every kind of radio related thing you can think of -- things like antennas, tower parts or complete units, radios that work, radios that almost work or used to work, all sorts of parts to build things with such as electronic components, wire, coax, insulators, telephone equipment, semiconductors, vacuum tubes, test equipment, computer related stuff, software, printers, memory, books and magazines, hardware, surplus military equipment, power supplies, soldering irons, older amateur radios and on and on. There is also a Red Tag table where you may bring along a piece of gear that you don't particularly want to just toss on the pile but would prefer to ask a price for. The rules are that you or someone you appoint must be near your goodie to sell it for you and remove it after the event or any time before. Also, you get to keep 90% of what you are asking for it and SBARC gets to keep 10% of it. Hey, that's a pretty good deal. The Bazaar runs from 8:00 am to noon. Be advised that the earliest bird gets the longest worm. So here is your chance to keep the little woman happy. Either she will be delighted that you have finally decided to clean out all that wonderful junque or she will be dancing up and down when she sees what trinket you have brought home with you! Yeah, sure. Bring all your friends. The club needs the money. Speaking of which, we will have several of our favorite people acting as salesmen and you can make such a deal with them. Go ahead, insult them with a ridiculous offer. They'll bargain with you. Bring green or checks. We're not set up to take plastic. And another thing, don't be shy about taking home a whole bunch of stuff. What you don't use you can always bring back to next year's Bazaar. That just enhances the Musical Garages idea. I plan on getting all the good stuff so if you really are thinking of taking home something special, better get there early. In the beginning of the event, you can look it all over and keep in mind what you can't live without. Then when the bell rings, run over to it and grab it and take it to one of our salesmen. They'll be obvious there. Another thing, after you pay for your item, take it over to your vehicle and lock it up in there and come back and shop some more. It's a terrible thing when something you paid for is then bought again by someone else and taken home. See you all on Saturday. 73, Darryl, KF6DI
