Hello SBARC List Server subscribers,
I want to pass along my apology for missing the SBARC meeting tonight. I'm
fighting off a flu bug and felt it was appropriate to keep it to myself.
So. I won't be there to promote ATV or to record the meeting. L
You are cordially invited to participate in ATVSIG, SBARC's Amateur TV
Special Interest Group. This group is involved in almost every club
activity and we need you on the team.
If you check into the Tuesday 7:30 PM SBARC ATV Net, …
[View More]we can get you on
Slow-Scan TV within a half-hour. That's all it takes and it opens a new
horizon for you in ham radio. ATV is even easier because you can start by
watching it live on the Internet (www.atn-tv.org and wb9kmo.camstreams.com).
ATV beacons are on 24x7 with most live activity in the evenings. Best times
are:
. Tuesday night at 7:30 PM (SBARC) and 8:00 PM (ATN)
. Saturday morning at 10:00 AM (SBARC)
. Sunday morning at 9:00 AM (ATN).
When you visit the Club Station (in the Red Cross building at 2707 State
St.) ask for a demo of ATV receive and transmit. At the touch of a switch,
swap live video with hams over 100 miles away.
Note that there are lots of ATV, SSTV, PSK31 and other specialized mode
programs (for HF to microwaves) on the Windows computer.
We're looking for a few good hams to become experts and elmers in these
areas. We've got a lot going on and we're constantly upgrading.
Get on board. Send me an email to tell me what you're interested in at
wb9kmo(a)sbarc.org.
We look forward to seeing you on ham radio real soon.
73,
Rod WB9KMO

Hi folks:
Here is a little update on the Montecito remote base. Our site (but NOT our
equipment) was destroyed by the Tea Fire, but we still hope to have the
equipment up and running on Montain Drive soon. Also, we are working on
some technical details. See below for details, and visit our web site for
the complete story:
http://www.n6kth.com/montecito
You can also find photos of the fire damage on the web site here:
http://www.n6kth.com/montecito/photos.htm
Be sure to SCROLL DOWN TO …
[View More]THE BOTTOM for the latest pictures.
Currently, the remote is functioning on a repeater test pair (448.880 MHz
minus offset) with a pl of 88.5 Hertz. For now, the remote is located in
downtown Santa Barbara and is in the testing phase.
Sadly, the property where we plan to locate the remote base was completely
destroyed in the Tea Fire of 11/13/08. Our friend Duke McPherson lost just
about everything.
Fortunately for us, we did not complete the preparation of the equipment, so
it was not located at the site during the fire! Unfortunately, the
enclosure was burned to the ground, and our hardline cable was destroyed.
The antenna was toppled, but apparently not damaged.
We hope to approach Duke in the near future about continuing to locate the
system on his property.
Calli continues to make needed improvements to the system. He has designed
an automatic temperature control system and has programmed the remote for
easy access to local repeaters. We also regularly use the remote to monitor
the SSB net on Wednesday evenings at 8:30 PM.

QRP Dinner this Friday before the SBARC meeting
Come to the meeting at
7:30 PM Friday, November 21
Guess what!
The QRP Special Interest Group (SIG) will be going to dinner together this Friday night before the November SBARC club meeting. Come and join us. We always have a very nice time, talk QRP, and down some of the best Italian food in Goleta.
We go to Presto Pasta, which is at 5764 Calle Real. We start showing up there at 5:30 PM. We hams wait until all have arrived before …
[View More]starting to eat, just like one pig waits for another!
After dinner, we will drive over to Fairview Ave., turn right and go less than 0.25 mile to the Goleta Union School District facility, which is right across the street from the Goleta Library. That is where we hold our monthly club meetings.
This being the last SBARC club meeting of the year, we will be having our election of officers and directors for the new year. You may nominate someone from the floor, with their permission, or even yourself if you would like to serve the club next year.
Then the excitement begins. Every Special Interest Group (SIG) will be bringing their favorite "stuff" to show off. Hopefully they will get you interested in their favorite activity within Amateur Radio. Spend some time looking over the gear, asking questions and meeting those who think that their SIG is the best of all of them. Having a favorite activity within the world's most exciting hobby has to just knock your socks off!
Whether your interest is DX chasing, Amateur Television (ATV), Transmitter Hunting, communicating through Amateur Satellites, PSK-31, Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), Antenna Construction, Automatic Position Reporting Systems (APRS), Weak Signal Communications (QRP), Microwave Mountain-Topping, or any other part of our great hobby that you just can't get enough of, bring over an example of it or an entire system and put it on display for the rest of us to look at and try to understand what it is all about. Grab a table in the room and use all of it or part of it to display your gear. Come early. Stay late. You will not want to miss this! Bring a guest with you. Is there a potential ham in your world?
Don't forget to make a little write-up about your equipment and place it near your things and don't forget to put your name and callsign on it as well. Tell about whether it is commercially made or you designed/built it, how old it is, where you have used it, what you have accomplished with it, etc.
And don't forget to bring your quality junque to deposit on the "free-to-good-home" table as well as take home your share of what others have deposited thereon.
Consider renewing your dues for next year. This will be the last meeting of this year and would be a good time to get ready for 2009. You can bring your membership application along if you haven't already sent it in. You can download one from our SBARC website.
Be sure to get your share of raffle tickets for the drawing and, if you get a chance, please bring along some refreshments to put alongside the coffee pot.
See you Friday.

Learn hidden transmitter hunting and build equipment for it at Lake
Los Carneros near Santa Barbara this coming Saturday, November 22.
Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them!
This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. Before the
hunt, Marvin will host a session of antenna and attenuator building
for those who have a two-meter hand-held radio or scanner, but don't
have any equipment for radio direction finding with it. If you
register with Marvin ahead of …
[View More]time, he will have kits for
measuring-tape yagis and active attenuators. There will also be tools
and soldering stations. If you're not an electronic technician, don't
worry because there will be experts to help you. We want you to succeed!
Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and get more
information about equipment. If you already have equipment and just
want to hunt, you don't need to pre-register.
The building session starts a 9 AM. Please be prompt. The main 5-fox
hunt begins about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 11:30
AM. Courses close at 2 PM.
Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have
any, just bring your handi-talkie or scanner and come early for the
building session. If you can't do that, come anyway, because a
limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure
to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes,
such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Bring your own
compass, protractor and pencil if you plan to use them for map
marking. Make sure that all batteries are fresh.
Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of
downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north
about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There
should be plenty of free parking. The building session and hunt start
will be in the picnic area, just east of the railroad depot.
A map to the Los Carneros site is at www.homingin.com. In case of
rainy or very wet conditions, the event might be postponed. Check the
Homing In site before you set out to make sure that the event is a
"go." Ham radio talk-in will be on the K6TZ repeater, 146.79(-) PL 131.8.

Friday November 21 is an especially important meeting that I would urge all
SBARC members to attend
First it is our annual SIG Night where each Special Interest Group will have
a representative present to answer questions
and whet your appetite for this and that form of activity, from ARES to DX to
ARDF and even ATV and satellites something for every interest in Ham radio!
Second it's election night for the SBARC Officers and Directors for 2009
You may vote for the proposed slate …
[View More]below, or put forth your own candidates or
run yourself!
But definitely be there for a lot of fun and our own small slice of
participatory democracy

Hi everyone!!!
Just a reminder that we will have a Hamfest Planning Meeting tonight at Rusty's
on Upper State Street next to Burger King. We will start at 6:30 PM, and should
be finished by 8:00 PM.
This will probably be the last meeting of this type for a while. I would have
loved to have more people attending and involved in the process, but that isn't
happening. And if something doesn't work, change it :). Putting on a great event
of any type requires dedicated people, and getting those …
[View More]people is my main goal
at this point.
I'll have a summary tonight of what has been discussed in past meetings and
discussions as well as what I see the basic format for the Hamfest. What we now
need are people willing and able to take charge of a particular aspect of
Hamfest, and run with it to make it happen. This will be a fairly small team of
people, and if you would like to be a part of that team, you NEED to be there
tonight.
If you aren't subscribed to the SBARC Listserver, I posted a link earlier to a
new service offered by Google called Google Moderator. The link below to a
question I started allows people to post questions and opinions about What Makes
a GREAT Hamfest. It is not a discussion group, but a place where questions and
opionions can be entered. Additionally, each question/opinion can be graded so
that the top ranked questions/opinions will move to the top of the list. If you
can't be there tonight but would still like some input, please post your
opinions at the new link. Additionally, please only post ONE
comment/question/opinion per posting; that makes the grading or voting on your
post possible.
http://moderator.appspot.com/#15/e=a249&t=a24a
Thanks, and see you tonight!
Marvin, KE6HTS

Google has a new feature that allows questions to be asked and opinions to be
asked. This is NOT a discussion group but a place where thoughts can be stated.
You need to have a Google account to ask questions or place opinions. My
thoughts have been along the lines of how to make our next Hamfest something
that people will WANT to attend and feel badly if they missed it. Please share
your thoughts and any questions at the link below:

Thanks!

Hello everyone,
As most of you know, there is a net every weekday morning called the Reg
Dawe Memorial Cuckoo net in which we all meet and rag chew, talk about
weather conditions and anything else that may come up. This net is not
exclusive and everyone is welcomed.
As an extension to that, Ken Owen (N6KTH) and Dave …
[View More]Milton (K6HWN) have
created the Reg Dawe Amateur Radio Association. The mission statement for
the association is that we are a group of hams dedicated to serving as
"elmers" to the amateur radio community, by guiding, assisting and
supporting fellow hams, following the example set by Reg Dawe W6HUT (sk). A
website has been established after securing Reg's call sign and can be found
at http://www.w6hut.net if you care to peruse it.
As time went on, I felt that there was a little bit of a void, not only in
the morning net, but with the SBARC net schedule generally. In thinking of
ways to fill this void, it seemed like it might be a good idea to have an
informal net, more of a "gathering", on Thursday evenings that would be
geared towards the new ham licensee that may have a lot of "newbie"
questions, questions about repeaters, how to use their radio, what IRLP
does, where exactly La Vagia hill is, and so on.
I've discussed this with KTH, HWN, and HUT(w7-type), and everyone has
provided positive feedback. After getting the blessings of our club
president, I am putting out this email to let you know that beginning next
Thursday evening, November 13, 2008, at 7:30 P.M. we will try and kick off
this net and see how it goes. This will not be a "formal" net, but really
just a time and place that people can come, ask any question they want
without feeling mic-shy, do radio tests, learn radio etiquette and things
like that. It may only be a thing where some of us simply monitor
just-in-case, or it may morph into another popular net where we all just get
together, like the A.M. net, but no one is "in charge" and there won't be
lengthy "interrogations".
In structuring this net, it seems to me that the knowledge and experience of
people in the Santa Barbara ham community is vast and very diverse.
Therefore, in my mind, for this to be successful and beneficial, it would be
great to have everyone participate to the extent that their schedules permit
to help spread the knowledge and experience we all have to bring new people
into amateur radio and SBARC. Again, this will not be a formal net where
someone is in charge and controls the net. I'm shooting for a forum where
everyone and every question or topic is welcomed.
I think it would add to the success of this "elmer" net to create awareness
at key events like the licensing classes offered by Bob Pizzi (AC6PZ), as
well as at the exit to the VE sessions for the new hams. Additionally, I've
been told we even have a number of HT's available to loan out at the club
station in order to help get folks on the air and involved. In addition to
the personal satisfaction of helping new hams get started, it may also
benefit the club by way of member recruitment and therefore public service
involvement.
I hope to hear everyone on TZ Thursday! If we get just one person involved,
it will be a success.
