NOTICE OF EQUIPMENT OUTAGE The La Cumbre Peak wind speed and wind direction failed during one of the recent wind and rain storms. The system will report all other parameters except WS and WD. It appears to be a failure of one of the poly carbonate pieces that holds the 3 wind speed cups in place. One cup broke away causing severe vibration and break up of the unit. Fortunately we have a spare and will get it installed soon as the weather clears. The broken unit may be replaced under warrantee. Other weather matters: Note: Addition problems, total was 12.6 inches of rain not 17.5. Diablo Peak measured a total of 17.5" inches of rain from 22 Jan thru 27 Jan. The Island Roads on Santa Cruz Island suffered major damage. The road from Prisoners to the main Ranch is totally wiped out and will have to be rebuilt from scratch. Thanks to Ken Owen, N6KTH, who set up the 223.92 repeater remote base on Santa Cruz Island with the 146.88 Ventura repeater being operated from the National Weather Service Forecast Center at Oxnard. The ARO on duty is assigned there to pick up SEVERE weather observations. If stormy weather conditions look normal then a report is not be necessary. However, any report will be accepted but please keep in mind that they are looking for anything unusual such as water spouts, creek levels, flooding, heavy rainfall in excess of 1 inch per hour at a sustained rate, lighting, high wind gusts in excess of 30 mph, and evacuations. You'll know chaos when you see it. Radar and satellite, however refined, do not always pick up these subtleties. Next ARDF February 2 near Santa Barbara

Also note that we will normally get together after the event at Sizzler's Restaurant. Marvin, KE6HTS ******************** The first southern California on-foot transmitter hunt of 2008 will be this coming Saturday (2/2) at Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta, CA. This will be the first in a series of events leading up to the USA ARDF Championships in Texas this May. But this course will be suitable for both beginners and experts. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them! This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres and relatively flat. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. Some practice transmitters may also be on the air for you to find. The main 5-fox hunt begins at 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 12:30 PM. Courses close at 2 PM. Electronic scoring will be used for the international-rules hunt. If you have an "e-stick," be sure to bring it. There is a $5 fee to cover expenses related to the use of Los Angeles Orienteering Club's e-punch equipment and maps. There will be no charge to hunt the beginner transmitters. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your handi-talkie or scanner. If you don't have that, come anyway, because a limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Bring your own compass, protractor and pencil if you plan to use them for map marking. Make sure that all batteries are fresh. Meet at the Stow House Parking Lot just off of Los Carneros Road. >From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. A map for navigation to the site is at www.homingin.com. In case of rainy or very wet conditions, the event will be postponed for two weeks. Take the Space Out of Our Call Signs by Darryl Widman, KF6DI By now, most of you have heard about Sacramento's inserting a space between characters of our Amateur Radio call signs on our license plates. If you care anything about how your call sign appears on your license plates, please do as I have done and contact our Governor and let him know what is on your mind. Another to contact is Senator Alan Lowenthal, California State Senate, 27th District, Chair, Transportation & Housing Committee 115 Pine Ave, Suite 430, Long Beach, CA 90802, Phone: (562) 495-4766 Fax: (562) 495-1876 Another very important person to contact is Assemblyman Pedro Nava, 35th Assembly District, Chair, Assembly Transportation Committee, Chair, Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security District Offices: Santa Barbara County 101 W. Anapamu Street, Suite A, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 Tel: (805) 564-1649, Fax: (805) 564-1651 As you can tell by the letter below that I faxed to the Governor's office in Los Angeles, there are good reasons for us to be disturbed by what the DMV has been doing lately. Please be my guest and write a letter to the Governor and others, based upon my letter if you wish, and give them a piece of your mind. Sitting there doing nothing will result in exactly the same thing. If you have ham license plates now, please drive very carefully and don't lose them. If you wished to have them replaced you will be very surprised with what you receive. If you are expecting new ham plates for your vehicle, guess what you will be receiving! January 8, 2008 Santa Barbara, CA 93108 Re: DMV putting a space in middle of Amateur Radio call signs on license plates Dear Governor Schwarzenegger, With all due respect, I feel that some of your department appointees are not carrying on in the best interest of your constituents, namely, the thousands of federally licensed Amateur Radio operators throughout our State of California. Like every other state in our country, California recognizes the fine service given by its Amateur Radio operators in times of disasters and emergencies by permitting them to display their FCC assigned call letters on their vehicle license plates, both front and rear. These specially assigned plates are instantly recognized by those who depend on the special talents of the "hams" to get the signal in and out when no other service is able to do it. They know that when all else fails, Amateur Radio gets through! Now, unlike every other state in the Union, California has made a decision that our assigned call letters are too difficult to work with where the state's DMV computers are concerned. For instance, my call sign is KF6DI. The DMV would break up my call sign and make it look like KF6 DI. Yes, the DMV has inserted a space somewhere between some characters and has destroyed the appearance of my call sign so that those who would instantly recognize it will now not recognize it for the importance that it holds. It appears that one gentleman in charge of the DMV is adamant about correcting his mistake and has gotten the entire Amateur Radio community up in arms! There is really no excuse for his behavior. The Red Cross, the Offices of Emergency Service, law enforcement and many others recognize our Amateur Radio call signs on our license plates with the call letters we were issued by the Federal Communications Commission. What gives this man the right to distort, confuse and destroy the integrity of a well-recognized identification? Please, Governor, use the powers of your good office and see to it that the Amateur Radio call sign license plate identification remains as it should and remove the inserted spaces the DMV computers are inserting. La Vigia weather

The NWS predicted high winds last night. The interesting surprise was La Vigia Hill (Vic Trace Reservoir) had a peak gust reaching 50 mph from the NE. La Vigia is 470 ft high overlooking Santa Barbara and is the site of the K6TZ weather station. Perhaps others already know about Claude Paillard, F2FO. I found a link to his web site, that includes a video showing him making his own vacuum tubes. He makes the electrodes and other parts from scratch, molds and fits the glass, and tests the performance.
