1) Santa Barbara Independent coverage of K6TZ Field Day: http://www.independent.com/news/2015/jul/21/amateur-radio-club-competes-fie… Please note, someone named John Kendall put what I believe is an erroneous comment at the bottom of this article. It needs to be corrected. Can someone with knowledge about the radios in the shack please submit a response (politely, despite his demeanor)? Is there really a marine radio in there? Perhaps someone could submit the exact radio and model number and capabilities (not marine?) in a reply (assuming he's referencing the one that the left-most operator is using??). Or, let me know, and I can submit. 2) Below is a summary of the Field Day entry form that I submitted this morning. It is due by 2059UTC today. If anyone sees any errors/corrections, please let me know [by calling me at 685-2030 as I'll be away from email]. I submitted 176 points for the below listed contacts, which includes bonus points for media coverage (thanks, Brian), and bonus points for submitting results via the ARRL web site. The form requests the number of participants but I'm not sure how many operators we had (Theo, who ran the event - thanx!, Leigh, me, and a new member/visitor who brought his son [sorry - forgot name]) - any I missed? I'm not sure who is pictured in the article at left - perhaps another operator I missed? Hamfest is Coming- August 16th

To all Radio Operators and members of SBARC Come join us all at Hamfest 2015. This year the event is at Stow Grove, Area #1 (the big one) and will be on Sunday, August 16th from 1000 until 1500. There will be the famous Bar-b-que put on by our own Tom Saunders. There will be raffle prizes. There will be games. There will be good times to be had by all. No admission, but BYOB. Sodas and water available to purchase Stow Grove is between North La Patera and Cathedral Oaks. Please come out and enjoy the company and stories of fellow HAMS. ARRLSB - ARRL Santa Barbara Section Mailing List -------------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI - Please pass to your newsletter editor HAMCON 2015, the 2015 ARRL Southwestern Division Convention, is September 11-13, 2015 at the Torrance Marriott Redondo Beach Hotel (same location as the 2007 and 2011 conventions.) Please visit: www.hamconinc.org for complete information. Your will find a full Vendor/Exhibitor Hall (65 booths), along with many interesting Tech Talk speakers. Every paid attendee also receives four free door prize tickets--no additional tickets will be sold or offered--and everyone has an equal chance. The grand registration door prize is a Kenwood TS-590SG HF transceiver. Those registering by July 31 will also be in a door prize drawing for a Kenwood TM-710G VHF/UHF mobile radio with built-in GPS and APRS. See What Makers Do - SB Hackerspace Open House

The Santa Barbara Hackerspace group (aka SBHX and SB Makerspace) has moved to an exciting new facility at 5782 Thornwood Drive in Goleta. The general public is invited to its Grand Opening open house at 6pm on July 17, 2015. SBHX and SBARC members have much in common. Several members belong to both groups. There is great potential synergy in the overlap of these groups since both embrace radios, computers, old and new technologies, construction, education and creativity. I encourage you to attend this open house to meet the friendly and passionate members of SBHX and to see their new facility and what they do. Ask them about ham radio and they can tell that several of their members are active hams. They have had an operational HF, VHF/UHF station for a long time. They have launched balloons with ham radio on board, and they are producing a 2-meter APRS transmitter using Arduino technology. Don't hesitate to become a member of SB Hackerspace. It might be the best thing you can do today to make ham radio even more exciting for you. The SBARC New Technologies Committee promotes the integration of new technologies into Amateur Radio. Let's all team up to use new technologies to enhance amateur radio, interest more and younger participants, teach each other about new devices and processes and more effectively serve ourselves and the community. It’s an APRS tracker designed for weather balloon tracking that measures just 1.9" x .75” and weighs 14 grams (without batteries) and runs off as little as 1 AAA battery. Quadcopter photos- Rasnow Peak

Folks: The Rabbit Radio Group under the direction of Emmett Dunlap, wa6cot, outdid themselves on Friday by mounting a cross arm to a 150 ft tower at Rasnow Peak which overlooks Thousand Oaks. The present antenna system is operational from the short tower at the bottom. Rabbit Radio has local 440 coverage of Santa Barbara County from Santa Ynez Peak and linked coverage over Southern California. All the personnel on top of the tower are Amateur Radio Operators. Jim Scott, kk6sxb, and I attended as line handlers but with 16 personnel on hand it was well covered.
