Soaring meet

The Third Occasional Santa Barbara Soaring Association Longest/Shortest Flight Contest is Saturday 1 March 2008 !!!! Our best prediction calls for good lapse rate to 6K. NW winds are also predicted. Im hoping/predicting that these will block by the middle of the day as frequently occurs here in Santa Barbara in these conditions. Contest rules <http://www.rrsd.com/sbsa/contest.html>www.rrsd.com/sbsa/contest.html - have been refined to consider the possibility that conditions might turn out to not be launchable. Pilots should meet at Parma Park at 9:00 AM. I realize that is very early for some of our local pilots. Please set your alarms and get there on time. This will give time to get organized. So I repeat: 9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008 Everyone present at 9:00 AM is guaranteed the opportunity to participate. Note the following: a) You have to be a club member Those who have not already done so are encouraged to bring their filled in membership for along with a check for $30. A copy of the membership form can be found at http://www.sbsa.info/SBSAMembershipForm.pdf . Those who live outside the area or for some reason can't support the club in this way can join the club for one day for $5 - just bring a bill. b) Don't forget to bring your $15 contest entry fee. Please try to bring 3 x $5 bills we don't have big problem making change. c) Team captains will all be local pilots and will be expected to apprise all team members of local rules and customs. For example, HG pilots do not head out to the beach if they have less than 3 K at the antenna farm. d) Well meet at Parma Park before and after the contest. This is situated in the middle of an area of high value homes and we have worked hard over the years to get along with the owners. Also, its possible that members of the local news media might make an appearance. So behavior which creates any kind of public nuisance cant be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, whooping, hollering, public drunkenness, excessive debauchery and similar behavior. e) We will have some support from the SBARC Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club. So when communicating on your 2 M Radio, observe normal radio protocol including occasional usage of your call sign. Robert Ramey

GTE Time Check

2/21/2008 To; SBARC Phone Patch Users From: Bill Talanian Subject: GTE Time Check Another institution gone away: Remember the old talking voice GTE Time Check on the telephone which somehow never had the exact precise time. Well it apparently went away last September but is still programmed into our auto-dial system on the two-meter and 224.12 systems. This slot will remain as is until a suitable voice readout of the time is found. WWV dial-in is one possibility.

To: Phone patch users From: Bill Talanian, W1UUQ The 224.120 and 145.180 telephone patch at Santa Ynez Peak is now up. Called Verizon service yesterday and it was remotely fixed the same day after being down for 4-5 days. If the system goes down again please let me know.

Lake Los Carneros results and upcoming events

The windy and stormy weather held off until evening, making February 2 a perfect day for ARDF in the Santa Barbara area. It was good to see first-timers Brad, Steve, Keith and Julianne, along with returning newcomer Owen and his dad. Everyone tried the two-meter five-fox ARDF course that was set by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. Lake Los Carneros is an ideal site for beginners to learn how to plan an ARDF route that efficiently gets them to each of the five transmitters and back in the minimum time. It's mostly level, but recent rains have swelled the lake and made some of the area into marsh. ARDF in Santa Barbara tomorrow, it's a go!

The weather forecast calls for only a 10 per cent chance of rain, so the first southern California radio-orienteering practice session of 2008 will take place at Lake Los Carneros near Santa Barbara on Saturday, February 2. This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres and relatively flat. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. Some practice transmitters may also be on the air for you to find. The main 5-fox hunt begins at 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 12:30 PM. Courses close at 2 PM. LAOC's electronic scoring equipment will be in use elsewhere, so standard punching will be used for this event and there will be no charge for participation. Meet at the Stow House Parking Lot just off of Los Carneros Road. >From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. A map for navigation to the site is at www.homingin.com. This will be the first in a series of events leading up to the USA ARDF Championships in Texas this May.
