Volunteer Opportunity: Community Vaccination Clinic
Cottage Health is in need of volunteers to assist with its drive-though community vaccination clinics. Volunteers who assist with the effort may be eligible to receive the vaccine.
There are openings for SBARC members to assist with event support, logistics and registration. This is a great opportunity for us to continue our mission to provide public service to the community, particularly during this disaster.
In the short term, volunteers are needed for drive-though clinics at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital this Thursday 1/21 and Friday 1/22 as well as next Thursday 1/28 and Friday 1/29. Volunteers are asked to sign up for either full-days 07:30-16:30 or half-days mornings or afternoons. Additional clinics will be scheduled in the weeks ahead as vaccine availability permits.
If you are interested in assisting, please complete the Eventbrite volunteer signup form at the link below. When you are contacted, please be sure to identify yourself as an SBARC member.

I’m with you there. I’m trying to channel Hiram Maxim. I think his response would be for us all to be eager and willing partners with the FCC to prevent and report unlawful use of our bands in regard to the current situation. A thick skin would serve us well here.

I got a call from Chuck Stersic, N6CJL (expired license) this afternoon,
and he let me know is wife, Avon, had passed away last week.
I doubt many current SBARC members will know, let alone remember either
of them. He was a member of the Elks, and helped SBARC a number of times
get the use of the Elks grove and parking lot for the SBARC Hamfest.
After Avon moved up to the Fresno area, Chuck stayed here for a few
years before joining here.

The Perseverance Rover and the Search for Ancient Life on Mars
Our January Presentation: The Perseverance rover, developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, is on its way to Mars. It will attempt to land on the Red Planet on February 18, 2021. Come hear about the rover and its mission to seek signs of ancient life on Mars. Matt Heverly will share what we have learned about Mars with past missions, give an overview of the Perseverance rover and its mission, and talk about the future Mars Sample Return mission, which will attempt to return rock samples collected by Perseverance to Earth for further study.
Our Speaker: Matt Heverly is a robotics engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
in Pasadena California. Matt earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a master's degree from Boston University with a focus on medical robotics. He has spent the majority of his career working on robots to explore Mars. He helped develop research robots for planetary exploration, operated the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on Mars, and was the Mobility Systems Engineer and Lead Driver for the Curiosity rover, which is still exploring Mars today. Currently Matt is the Surface Phase Lead for the Mars Sample Return, Sample Retrieval Lander mission.

A local school was "cleaning house" and I picked up the "electronic
scrap" that was going to recycle. If anyone wants one or all of these
power strips, let me know.
Also I have a number of color DEll/IBM computer monitors ranging from
15" to probably 17". Let me know if interested.
And ditto for a couple of smaller laptops running XP and Vista.
I'm not at all interested in shipping, so pickup only. I will be going
in for cataract surgery Monday so that day is out. But almost anytime
during this weekend should be fine.
Thanks!
