Folks:
After fire, flood, and even a earthquake Matt Lechliter finally got back
to Santa Ynez Peak thru the "mud zone" today from Oxnard. I teamed up
with Matt and Chris Arnoult and was sure glad that I did not try this
run during the rain storm. There was ample evidence of wash out's with
heavy mud debris that could easily force a vehicle off the road. First
stop would be a shear 1000 ft drop in an area we call the Bolivian Mile.
Matt installed the repaired final amplifier in the 146.18 repeater which
previously was motor-boating. Few people realized the 145.18 repeater
was operating for many weeks with only the Exciter running 150
milliwatts which was still heard by most people. The repeater is now
back to 25 watts along with its partner repeater on 145.16 which is also
running 25 watts. There is much to compare here with two co-located
systems but with _different an__te__nna patterns._ In addition Matt went
through the controller programming sequence to see if it helps get rid
of the annoying M-A-C-R-O 9 voice response. Will watch this for a while
and see if this fix works.
I believe it is safe to say that the 145.16 system is now 100% fully
operational between Santa Ynez Peak and the WD6EBY repeater
(145.20/144.60 127.3 PL) at Sulphur Mountain in Ventura County. This is
intended to be a full time linked system with no buttons to push. Our
goal is a Tri-County VHF repeater system covering the most populated
areas. We are working on securing the final leg to SLO County.
Meanwhile, Have Fun and let OBB know how both systems are working with
your associates in tough RF areas.

Hi All,
I just received an email from the Red Cross stating that the parking lot will be closed to all non Red Cross traffic tomorrow, Saturday January 27, 2018.
They are still working on recovering from the fire and mudslide/flood events and have response and delivery vehicles coming and going.
I don’t know if I will go down there tomorrow or not because there aren’t many other places to park around there and turnout will probably be very light.
If you are planning on going to the shack tomorrow, it might be a good idea to call on the radio first to make sure someone’s there.

I use to refer to Ian as the Lone-Ranger being out there by himself on San
Miguel for long periods without seeing too many visitors. He is without a
doubt one of the finest persons I have worked with over his career at the
Park. Ian introduced me to the Park communications system many years ago. He
was the single most person responsible for the success of the Channel
Islands National Park multiple repeater system.
For those who are not acquainted with Ian, he is none other than kd6vwr (E).
A true professional Ranger with a host of specialties from diving, firearms,
communications, tower climbing, logistics and security. As a volunteer it
was my pleasure to accompany Ian to many remote sites and provide a
tech-assist. I wish he and Marcella all the best with his new career.

This month was due to be the end of my career with the National Park
Service.? Next week I reach mandatory retirement age from law enforcement
and therefore will no longer eligible for the San Miguel Island ranger
position in which I've served for the past 25 years.? I was scheduled to be
retired from the agency on January 31, but have been fortunate enough to be
given a new opportunity here at the park.
Today, for the first time in my career, I came to work as something other
than a park ranger.? It feels strange to say that after 35 years, and I
guess I'll always still think of myself as a ranger, but my job with the NPS
is now as a Safety & Occupational Health Specialist.? The job is a one-year
term position that can be extended up to four years.?
(It's a bit like a continuing resolution, only longer.)? It will give the
park a chance to try having a position that is dedicated to safety, and it
will give me a chance to try to help the rest of the park staff to make the
Channel Islands a safer place to work and visit.
For anyone that was planning on getting together with us on February 3rd for
a retirement party, I'm happy to report it has been cancelled.?
Although it is always fun to see everyone at those events, believe me, I'm a
lot happier to still be working with so many of them.
Marcella and I came out to San Miguel today for one final tour.? Even though
I had to start the new position before the end of the month, I had
previously been scheduled out here for one more week to wrap up a few
projects and pack up what has been our home for 25 years.? Leaving the
island will still be a sad moment, but it's a lot better knowing that I'm
not yet leaving the park and the people that make Channel Islands the
world's greatest national park.

For those of you who get up early (or stay up late), the second full Moon of January will pass through Earth's shadow, producing a rare "Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse." The Moon won't look blue, however. Researchers are predicting a bright orange eclipse--a forecast based on studies of recent volcanic activity. The partial eclipse will begin at 03:48 PST and totality will be from 04:52 - 06:08. The partial eclipse ends at 07:11. If you don’t want to be up too early, assuming there is no fog, you might get the best views of the final partial phases between 06:15 - 06:45.

Diablo Peak Update
The former equipment enclosure was decommissioned on 17 January due to
the end of life of the AGM battery system. All amateur equipment is in
the process of relocation to the main shelter. The 223.92 repeater and
the 2-meter 146.655 will be temporarily off the air pending personnel
access to the peak to complete the task.

SBARC General Club Meeting
Friday, January 19, 2018 at 7:30 PM
Goleta Union School District Board Room
400 North Fairview Avenue in Goleta
Amateur radio operators in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties proved to be valuable assets in the Thomas Fire and now once again with the ongoing Montecito mudslide disaster. As a result of our members' efforts to keep our analog and digital communications systems up-to-date with relevant information about evacuations, firefighting efforts and recovery operations, the ARRL featured SBARC in an article in its weekly email newsletter last week.
Everyone on the air rose to the occasion, especially during the critical days of the Thomas Fire. Amatuer radio remains a critical lifeline for those now affected by the disaster in Montecito.
At our meeting on Friday, we will host a debriefing and discussion with our membership about what the Club did well and what we can improve upon for future emergency responses. Please join us on Friday to let us know your thoughts on the future of amateur emergency communications in Santa Barbara.
We hope to see you all at the meeting!

Has anyone heard from Darryl after the mudslide?

Thanks for sharing this Marvin, we need as much accurate info as possible.
The SBARC BOD discussed this important subject during our monthly meeting last night. We are now in the process of moving forward with a letter from the Club expressing these concerns.
