Results and photos of the Topanga Park ARDF session of last Saturday
are now on the Web. Also Marvin has written some course notes that
will help you understand how experienced radio-orienteers achieve good
results on a course such as this.

The next session will be on the campus of Cal Poly University in San
Luis Obispo on Saturday, February 22. More information will be in the
Web site soon.

Everything is GO for the on-foot transmitter hunting session at Topanga
State Park on Saturday, January 25. Marvin Johnston KE6HTS will have
kits for measuring-tape yagis and active attenuators, but you must send
e-mail to him (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register if you want to build a
kit. If you already have equipment and just want to hunt transmitters,
you don't need to pre-register -- just show up.
The building session will start at 9:30 AM. Please be prompt. Beginner
transmitters will be on the air at that time. The
main 5- fox hunt will start about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start the
courses at any time until 1 PM. Courses close at 3 PM.
For the advanced 2-meter course, electronic scoring will be used. If
you have an "e-stick," be sure to bring it. An optional $5 donation is
requested for the advanced course to cover expenses related to the use
of Los Angeles Orienteering Club's e-punch equipment and maps. The
beginner course and the 80-meter transmitter hunt are free of charge
and e-punch is not required for them.
Trails are primitive in some areas of the park, so wear sturdy shoes.
All ages are welcome, but young children must be accompanied by an
adult at all times. Dogs are not allowed on the park trails, fire
roads, or in the back country.
Topanga State Park is in the Santa Monica Mountains. From Highway 101
in Woodland Hills, go south on Topanga Canyon Boulevard (Highway 27)
about 8 miles. From Pacific Coast Highway, go north on Topanga Canyon
Boulevard to just past Old Topanga Canyon Road. Either way, watch for
a "Topanga State Park" sign and turn east onto Entrada Road. (This is
a dangerous corner.) Go about a mile, bearing left at the fork. We
will gather at the end of the parking lot in the shaded picnic area.
Look for the orange and white orienteering flag. Talk-in is on 146.52
MHz simplex. The state day-use fee for entry and parking is $10 per
vehicle.
A map showing the site location is at www.homingin.com.

Hello All,
I have recently purchased a Kenwood 3530 A 220 rig, from the nice folks at SBARC.
I understand that there are several manufacturers, VHF Engineering, Mirage, etc. I'd like to purchase one with the capabilities of 10 watts in and from 70 thru 125 watts out. That would suit me perfectly.
If you have one that you are willing to part with, or know of the whereabouts of one, would you please pass along that info to me?
Many thanks for taking the time to respond!

Transparent Loudspeaker Uses Stretchable, Ionic Conductors
http://video.techbriefs.com/video/Stretchable-Transparent-Ionic-C;Power
In this video, a materials science laboratory at Harvard University is filled with music (the "Morning" prelude from Peer Gynt) played on a transparent ionic speaker. The speaker consists of a thin sheet of rubber sandwiched between two layers of a saltwater gel. A high-voltage signal runs across the surfaces and through the layers forces the rubber to rapidly contract and vibrate, producing sounds that span the entire audible spectrum, 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. This device represents the first demonstration that electrical charges carried by ions, rather than electrons, can be put to meaningful use in fast-moving, high-voltage devices. "You can integrate it anywhere you would need a soft, transparent layer that deforms in response to electrical stimuli - for example, on the screen of a TV, laptop, or smartphone to generate sound or provide localized haptic feedback - and people are even thinking about smart windows," says Harvard postdoctoral fellow Christoph Keplinger.
Hi Scott,
Let me pass this along and see if someone can help you. Thanks for writing.

Subject: looking for information re proper use of radio/repeaters
Hi,
My name is Scott McFerran and I live in Santa Ynez. I recently purchased 2 Motorola Talkabout 2way radios, model MS355R. The radios include a GMRS duplex channel feature which I would like to use in a proper manner.
Is there a person in your club that would be willing to help me understand this feature and use it properly?
Thanks!

All SBARC members and visitors welcome. Please see the web-site (SBARC.Org) for the program for each month.
Door open at 6:45 pm, talk in on K6TZ 146.79 PL 131.8
The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club holds its General Meetings on the third Friday of the month (except for the months of June, July, August, and December) at the Goleta Union School Dist. Admin. Center Board Room.
The meeting starts at 7:30pm, but come early for the "Free-to-Good-Home" Table, SBARC Bookstore, and socializing.
Topics and speakers have ranged from DXing with the Pope, Gordon West, JPL Demonstration, Old Timers' Night, and Come Fly With Us! (hang gliding and Amateur Radio).
The next southern California on-foot transmitter hunting session will
be at Topanga State Park on Saturday, January 25, 2014. There will be
entry-level two-meter "fox" transmitters, set by Joe Moell K0OV and a
5-fox two-meter international-rules course, set by Marvin Johnston
KE6HTS. One or two optional 80-meter fox transmitters may also be on
the air. If you have receivers, scanners, directional antennas,
attenuators, or other equipment suitable for on-foot RDF, be sure to
bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. A limited amount of RDF
gear will be available for loan.
For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter
hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin will have kits for measuring-tape
yagis and active attenuators. There will be tools and soldering
stations for building. If you're not an electronic technician, don't
worry because there will be experts to help you. Send e-mail to Marvin
(marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and get more information about
equipment. The building session will only take place if there are
sufficient advance registrations. If you already have equipment and
just want to hunt transmitters, you don't need to pre-register -- just
show up.
If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:30 AM. Please
be prompt. Beginner transmitters will be on the air at that time. The
main 5-fox hunt will start about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start the
courses at any time until 1 PM. Courses close at 3 PM.

requested for the advanced course to cover expenses related to the use
of Los Angeles Orienteering Club's e-punch equipment and maps. The
beginner course and the 80-meter transmitter hunt are free of charge
and e-punch is not required for them.
