KEYT Parent Company to Co-Own KCOY
Also Purchasing Stations in Monterey and San Luis Obispo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Tyler Hayden (Contact)
The parent company of KEYT announced Monday that, pending final approval from the Federal Communications Commission, it will soon co-own Santa Maria's CBS affiliate KCOY and purchase FOX affiliate KKFX in San Luis Obispo. News-Press & Gazette Company (which is based in St. Joseph, Missouri, and has no relation to The Santa Barbara News-Press) will also buy up KMUV and KION in Monterey.
According to a statement from News-Press & Gazette Company, current KCOY owner Cowles Media will continue to take care of management and programming duties while News-Press will provide news, back office, engineering, and sales support services. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2013. News-Press and Cowles Media representatives were not immediately available for comment.
The announcement comes around a year after the News-Press & Gazette Company bought KEYT from Smith Media for a reported $14.25 million. Since then, KEYT has added high-definition broadcasts, hired a number of new reporters, upgraded equipment, and launched a new website. During the transition, Mark Danielson took over the general manager position. News-Press & Gazette Company owns or co-owns 23 television stations and 4 radio stations throughout the country.
If anyone is interested in helping out at a radio position for
the upcoming Carpinteria Triathlon there are plenty of good positions to be
filled. The event is Sunday, September 29th and it starts at 0700. Please
contact me and give me your T-shirt size so you can get a free T-shirt for
working the event. The Carpinteria Triathlon People have always welcomed us
with much appreciation for our skills and support. Please get back to me if
you can make it.

Southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt will be
this Saturday, September 14 at Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta, CA.
Besides some easy fox transmitters just to help you learn and test your
equipment, there will be a beginner-level international-rules course on
the two-meter band, set by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. There will also be
a foxoring course on the 80 meter band. You can try either or both
courses as your available time allows. The site area is slightly less
than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for
foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one help to
get started at finding transmitters, just ask. Full-color orienteering
maps will be available.
For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter
hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin will have kits for measuring-tape
yagis and active attenuators for the two-meter band. Also available is
an assembled and tested assembly that includes the power switch, BNC
connector, housing and battery, ready to install as the tape measure
beam is built. There will be tools and soldering stations for
building. If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry because
there will be experts to help you. We want you to succeed! Send
e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and get more
information about equipment.
If you already have equipment and just want to hunt transmitters, you
don't need to pre-register.
The building session will start at 9:30 AM. Please be prompt. Beginner
transmitters will be on the air at that time. The main 5-fox hunts on
both bands will start about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start the courses at
any time until 1 PM. Courses close at 3 PM.
There is no charge for participation. If you have receivers, scanners,
directional antennas, attenuators, or other equipment suitable for
on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh.
A limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan.
Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of
downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north
about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There
should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white
orienteering flag. The building session and hunt start will probably
be in the parking lot. If that is too crowded, we will move to a
nearby picnic area.
Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater, 147.000(+) PL 131.8.

Hi all,
First a thank you for a job well done at the convention in Buellton.
Everyone I talked to, including myself, had a great time up there.
This Saturday (Sept 14), we will be having another ARDF practice session
at Lake Carnaros.
In addition to our usual ARDF 2M practice, we will be doing a short
FoxOring course. FoxOring is a combination of orienteering and 80M
DFing. Basically you navigate to the circle shown on the map. And from
within that circle, you can hear a very low power transmitter with an
80M receiver.
Since it is unlikely that many people will have an 80M receiver, we will
have some to loan out.
As usual, you can see more information on the HomingIn website at:

Thanks!
Marvin, KE6HTS
