HAM Radio is alive on the Air in TV World
For those of you not familiar with the show "Last Man Standing", Tim Allen
plays a character called Mike Baxter. In this last Fridays episode Mike
regales the virtues of Ham Radio and its stable, regulated format. I hope
you enjoy.

Note: I don't plan on having an antenna building workshop at this event
although I will have a kit or two available if anyone is interested.
Thanks!

Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta, CA will be the site of southern
California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt, starting about
10:00 AM. Hunters may start the courses at any time until 1 PM.
Courses close at 3 PM. There is no charge for participation.
Besides some easy fox transmitters to help you learn and test your
equipment, there will be a international-rules course on the two-meter
band. There will also be a foxoring course on the 80 meter band. You
can try any of the courses as your available time allows. An optional
80-meter fox transmitter may also be on the air. The site area is
slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good
site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one
help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask. Full-color
orienteering maps will be available.
If you have receivers, scanners, directional antennas, attenuators, or
other equipment suitable for on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make
sure all batteries are fresh. A limited amount of RDF gear will be
available for loan.
Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of
downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north
about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There
should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white
orienteering flag. Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater,
147.000(+) PL 131.8.

Hi all,
Just a comment about joining SBARC online (and yes, Jay was elected
SBARC President last night and I'm joining as promised.)
It is possible that the comments I've heard about being able to join or
pay membership fees online are wrong. If so, please correct or ignore
some of the statements below.
There is nothing obvious on the home page about joining SBARC, a
somewhat careful reading is required to find that link. The
Donation/Membership button is somewhat confusing as to why it is there,
or who it is for.
So I try to join online, and first thing I see is the Membership Button
labeled donation with no dollar amount for joining.
Okay, try something else.
I search around and find the join SBARC information that says to write a
check and send in the filled out PDF file.
This implies that either the wording is wrong, or people cannot join online.
This morning, I said the heck with it and blasted through on the
donation button and will give the application to Dave at the club station.
Nice touch on making the downloaded PDF to allow typed in responses
before printing!
I did notice there is no space for short comments. It may or may not be
appropriate to mention there that I am an ARRL Santa Barbara Assistant
Section Manager.
Thanks!
Marvin, KE6HTS
P.S. - Parts of the PDF form on the website show some garbage with my
browser (FireFox), i.e. total description and amount. The downloaded
form looks fine. Second, the PDF did not print out with all of the
fields filled in as typed.

I belong to a couple organizations but the one I work with the most is GEM (Global Emergency Communications) http://www.gem-int.org. We are in the midst of it again. What we are able to do this disaster is provide Health and Welfare information to people requesting it. If you have a loved one we are on the ground in Cebo and Manila and other areas where there is power getting messages to and from the affected area.We thank CNN for doing their part and hope we can do our part by working together. -Ray, KA1AAA

Peeling back the onion...
It appears that the Bylaws change isn't just about a smaller Board.
At least two of SBARC's present Board members are involved in a
competing non-profit with a mission overlapping that of SBARC.
Buried within the job description of a new appointed position is the
requirement that SBARC sponsor this entity, utilize it when providing
telecommunications support, and provide resources, equipment, and
personnel to it.
Buried in the Bylaws changes:
The Manager of Telecommunications shall be responsible for providing
Telecommunications support through the Santa Barbara Telecommunications
Advisory Council (SBTAC) and others, in support of communications
education and training and emergency preparedness for the community. He
or she shall coordinate with other Club members to provide resources of
equipment and personnel in support of the Club sponsored SBTAC unit
during emergency activities and training.

Hi all,
I've heard some rumors going around talking about the membership when
Jay was last president in 2003/2004 dropping to about 60 people. That is
false at worst and misleading at best.
The actual numbers taken directly from the 2003 and 2004 membership
database show the membership at the end of the year as:
2003 - 224
2004 - 236
Additionally, SBARC was still mailing out printed copies of KeyKlix via
bulk non-profit rate, and that requires a minimum of 200 pieces.
That count of 60 could have been gotten from the very early months as
that would have been typical before everyone had joined/rejoined.
Hope this clears up any confusion.
Thanks!

Hi everyone,
We had 10 people come to dinner last night including a couple of board
members where we discussed the upcoming bylaws changes (among other things.)
First, I think Jordan will make an excellent member of the board, and I
really hope club members will support his desire to be on the board.
And I think Theo will also be a good addition to the board as he is on
the slate of candidates.
Both are regulars at the meeting and have shown a real interest and
dedication to ham radio
The proposed board seems to be a pretty well balanced mix of newer
members with ideas that can help build SBARC with older members who can
give perspective on why things are/have been done (my opinion.)
Second, some really good discussion took place about the desire to
reduce the board count. Total agreement that 5 just does not give enough
accountability to the membership. And accountability seems to be the top
concern. The number nine got tossed around a lot, and is probably a
reasonable number.
Third, and this should be obvious to all, there is a lack of respect by
some SBARC people for opinions other than their own. This is not a way
to encourage others to want to get involved, and will drive people away.
There was also agreement that the bylaws changes should not be voted on
at the November meeting. There are just too many problems with content
and timing for it to be appropriate. But there was also mostly agreement
that changing/updating the bylaws needs to be looked at.
Finally, Dennis (WB6OBB), Chuck (N6CPN), and myself were talking on the
ride home about the days with a much higher membership count. Both were
involved with SBARC long before I became a member in 1993 or 1994. The
comment was that SBARC was a much more social club back then. Something
to think about.
Thanks!
Marvin, KE6HTS
P.S. - Dennis makes regular announcements that people are welcome to
join us for dinner. It is a sociable group of mostly hams where the
conversation goes all over the place. We welcome new people, but just
let us know so we have enough table space for all. The normal attendance
is 6 - 8 people.
