Some of you may know that I DX the AM and FM broadcast bands. About 5:00
yesterday afternoon I was parked on Vista del Campo near the intersection of
Portesuello Ave.; a little above the Santa Barbara Community Academy off
Modoc. I was doing a FM broadcast band bandscan.
The radio in my Honda Fit stopped on 101.3 MHz. There was a full quieting
stereo signal that appears to be rebroadcasting an unknown frequency on one
of the HF bands. I heard a little splatter from an adjacent frequency and
later a transmission that was being received on the wrong sideband. I kept
it on as I drove home. Where Portesuello Ave. crests it was extremely
strong. As I headed down toward Las Positas it got weaker. It was still
there but weak after I turned left onto Las Positas. When I turned left on
Cliff Drive it went away completely.
I had it on this morning on my way to work. I live at the corner of Cliff
Drive and Loma Alta. After heading down the hill past SB City College when I
got out in the clear and could see downtown the signal reappeared. It was
not very strong and quickly faded. North on 101 it got stronger around
Mission and was quite strong at Las Positas. The HF receiver was tuned to a
roundtable QSO that was tuned in perfectly. I could easily understand what
every station was saying. It faded near La Cumbre and was fairly weak after
that.
It was on as I drove home from work today around 4:45. There was a WA5 tuned
in perfectly calling another station that did not reply.
Although I already knew what I was going to find I checked the FCC web site.
It shows no licensed stations in Santa Barbara on that frequency. The
closest licensed station on 101.3 is in SLO.
I don't think this is accidental but I don't have a theory as to what it is.
Perhaps some of you T-hunters might have fun with this.

Greetings all SBARC members and guests!
This Friday night, March 19, 2010, will be when we hold our third meeting of the New Year. Our president, Al Soenke, WA6VNN, wants to meet and greet every one of you. He also wants to hear your ideas of what kind of exciting things we as a club might do this year. Bring your thoughts, your good ideas, and let him hear from you. I have a couple of those myself. What do you think SBARC should do this year to head us in the direction of growing to 500 members that we were famous for? You do know that absolutely nothing is impossible. We did put a man on the moon, didn't we? What would you like SBARC to do?
The program for the evening will be using your 2-meter handheld radio as you soar up in the sky on your very own hang gliding or paragliding outfit.
Our guest speakers for the evening will be Zac Majors and Greg Brown, KG6TVN. This promises to be a fascinating experience for all of us. Bring your friends with you.
The 2009 World Hang Gliding Championship was held between June 21st and July 4th at Laragne, France. A surprisingly impressive USA team had two top 10 finishes with Zac Majors coming in 4th place. Zac holds an Advanced Instructor Rating and Tandem Instructor/ Administrator from the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA).
Greg Brown, a linguistics instructor at UCSB, is a professionally trained paraglider and hang glider instructor.
Do you like our refreshment break during the meetings? Are you able to bring some goodies for the refreshment table? Cookies, donuts, cake, fresh fruit -- always a hit. Please make a note to yourself. Either President Al or Exec. VP Michael, W7HUT, will be bringing the hot Starbucks coffee. If you are able, please bring some hot coffee, too. Can anyone bring some soft drinks?
Come early, stay late. Put your hand out. Welcome some new hams to our wonderful hobby. Bring some junque for our 'Free to a Good Home' table. I'm bringing about 50 pounds of it. Take some home with you. Be sure you don't miss that table which is on the north side of the room under the windows.
As always, it will be my pleasure to greet as many of you as I can.
If you are new to our club, we meet at the Goleta Union School District board room which is located at 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, directly across the street from the Goleta Library. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM, but come early.
