JPL INVITES PUBLIC TO ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE
Jet Propulsion Laboratory News Advisory
WHAT: NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., welcomes the
public to its annual Open House on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3,
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lab will salute the 40th anniversary of
NASA's Apollo 11 mission - the first human landing on the moon. JPL
will also celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, a United
Nations-endorsed series of events around the world that commemorate
the 400th anniversary of the first telescope observations of space and
planets by Italian scientist Galileo Galilei.
Open House highlights include: seeing JPL's next spacecraft bound for
Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory, in the lab's biggest "clean room;"
talking to scientists and engineers who work on missions to
destinations such as Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Earth's moon; and
visiting JPL's Microdevices Lab, where engineers and scientists work
in the world of the ultra-miniature. Visitors can also view the sun
through solar-safe telescopes, and learn how NASA instruments measure
greenhouse gases, helping scientists better understand global climate
change.
Besides the many exhibits and displays, the Open House will feature
hands-on activities for children. Visitors can find out how NASA
missions are using new media tools such as Twitter at the "The Tweet
Spot" booth. Portions of the event will also air live online on
Ustream TV at
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasajpl
on Saturday, May
2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHEN: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. Admission and

Dreier Museum
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to let you know I have arranged for a tour of the Dreier Museum on
Saturday May 16th from 2-4:30 pm.
You may not have heard of this place but it is generally not open to the
public unless if is arranged for in advance. This is a private collection
of Movie/TV
memorabilia, Music memorabilia, Gems and Minerals/Fossils, Sports
Memorabilia, and many other items. This is a private collection of Chad and
Ginny Dreier
and it is located in an old estate on Miramonte Drive near KEYT. Chad
Dreier is the CEO of the Ryland Group which is the 2nd top building
corporation
in the U.S.. So he has big bucks and uses it to buy lots of stuff and also
is a big donor to the Police Activities League and other charities.
Anyway, of the many collectibles he has is a room totally dedicated to
Lucille Ball. There are newspaper articles, letters and postcards written
by her
to her mother and Desi, pictures of her with many of her co-stars and actual
clothing/costumes that she wore on her shows along with many other props.
He also has many Disney collectibles such as Davy Crockett stuff, old
tickets, pictures, figurines, etc.
The gem collection includes a rare 40 - 50 pound uncut emerald!
For the sports fan, he has a HUGE room with baseball, football, basketball,
boxing memorabilia such as a baseball bat actually used by Babe Ruth and
many
old baseball trading cards with one actually worth $2 million !
It is an amazing place! I was up there in October when they had an open
house for Police and Fire employees.
I was awed and amazed by this place and I think you will be too!
Plus the view is FANTASTIC!
So invite your friends and be ready for an awesome experience!
They will provide Drinks and finger foods for us. The cost of this will
be $15.00 per person. Please let me know if you are interested. I will need
to give them a head count by May 8th and send them the money by May 13th.
I wanted to tell you about the place. If you have any questions let me
know. You can call me at (805) 966-7060 or e-mail me, dennis(a)west.net

HI All,
I saw that as well; too bad Samuel Morse would not
recognize some of those letters because they used
the International Morse Code that came about in
1911, and not his original code.

QRP Dinner this Friday before the SBARC meeting
Come to the club meeting at
7:30 PM Friday, April 17
The QRP Special Interest Group (SIG) will be going to dinner together, as we always do, this Friday night before the March SBARC club meeting. Come and join us. We always have a very nice time, talk QRP and down some of the best Italian food in Goleta.
We go to Presto Pasta, which is at 5764 Calle Real. We start showing up there at 5:30 PM. We hams wait until all have arrived before starting to eat. Yeah right!
After dinner, we will drive up to Fairview Ave., turn right and go less than 0.25 mile to the Goleta Union School District, 401 No. Fairview Ave., which is right across the street from the Goleta Library.
At our April meeting, SBARC will continue holding its giant Membership sign-up. Meet our Treasurer, Cindy, KA7UIA. She will be delighted to sign you up for another year of membership in the best Amateur Radio club in California.
The program for this meeting will be the one that was cancelled at the last minute in March but with two additional speakers!
Sergeant Tom Walton, head of emergency preparedness for the SB County Sheriff's Department recently attended the Orfalea Foundation conference with our club president, Michael Ditmore, W7HUT, and kindly offered to speak at one of our meetings. Michael asked if he could do it this Friday and he enthusiastically said yes.
Also speaking will be Mitch Evans, County Communications Manager and Will Tefft, KG6DHK, SBARC's VP of Emergency Services.
The subject of these presentations will be emergency preparedness and the value of Amateur Radio support in emergencies.
Don't forget to bring your quality junque to deposit on the "free-to-good-home" table as well as take home your share of what others have deposited thereon.
Please renew your dues for 2009. It's still just $24. Please bring along some cookies or whatever your favorite might be for the coffee table. Don't forget to get your share of tickets to win the door prizes. I'm getting my share!
See you this Friday.

Hi folks:
It's been some time since I've written to everyone about the "Montecito"
remote base. As you will remember, the property where we intended to
install our equipment was destroyed in the Tea Fire. We have not decided to
locate it at Painted Cave. Check out our web page for the full story and
some updated photos:
