Another Email/Virus Scam!
RECENT FBI E-MAIL SCHEME
1. THE FBI TODAY WARNED THE PUBLIC TO AVOID FALLING VICTIM TO AN
ON-GOING MASS E-MAIL SCHEME WHEREIN COMPUTER USERS RECEIVED UNSOLICITED
E-MAILS PURPORTEDLY SENT BY THE FBI. THESE SCAM E-MAILS TELL THE
RECIPIENTS THAT THEIR INTERNET USE HAS BEEN MONITORED BY THE FBI AND
THAT THEY HAVE ACCESSED ILLEGAL WEB SITES. THE E-MAILS THEN DIRECT
RECIPIENTS TO OPEN AN ATTACHMENT AND ANSWER QUESTIONS.
2. THE E-MAIL APPEARS TO BE SENT FROM THE E-MAIL ADDRESSES OF
MAIL(a)FBI.GOV AND ADMIN(a)FBI.GOV. THERE MAY BE OTHER SIMILARLYSTYLED
ADDRESSES. THE RECIPIENT IS ENTICED TO OPEN THE ZIP ATTACHMENT WHICH
CONTAINS A W32/SOBER.JEN@MM WORM. THE ATTACHMENT DOES NOT OPEN AND ITS
GOAL IS TO UTILIZE THE RECIPIENT'S COMPUTER TO GARNER INFORMATION.
SECONDLY, THE VIRUS ALLOWS THE E-MAIL TO BE FORWARDED TO ALL THOSE
LISTED IN THE RECIPIENT'S ADDRESS BOOK.
3. THE TEXT OF THE EMAIL IS AS FOLLOWS:
Dear Sir/Madam,
We have logged your IP-address on more than 30 illegal Websites.
Important: Please answer our questions! The list of questions are attached.
Yours faithfully,
Steven Allison
Federal Bureau of Investigation-FBI-
935 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW , Room 3220
Washington , DC 20535
Phone: (202) 324-30000
4. THESE E-MAILS DID NOT COME FROM THE FBI. RECIPIENTS OF THIS OR SIMILAR
SOLICITATIONS SHOULD KNOW THAT THE FBI DOES NOT ENGAGE IN THE PRACTICE
OF SENDING UNSOLICITED E-MAILS TO THE PUBLIC IN THIS MANNER. OPENING E-MAIL
ATTACHMENTS FROM AN UNKNOWN SENDER IS A RISKY AND DANGEROUS ENDEAVOR AS SUCH
ATTACHMENTS FREQUENTLY CONTAIN VIRUSES THAT CAN INFECT THE RECIPIENT'S
COMPUTER. THE FBI STRONGLY ENCOURAGES COMPUTER USERS NOT TO OPEN SUCH
ATTACHMENTS. THE FBI TAKES THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY AND IS INVESTIGATING. WHILE
THE ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER FOR THE FBI IS CORRECT IN THE EMAIL, USERS
RECEIVING E-MAILS OF THIS NATURE ARE ENCOURAGED TO REPORT IT TO THE INTERNET
CRIME COMPLAINT CENTER VIA HTTP://WWW.IC3.GOV <http://www.ic3.gov/> .
5. THIS INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY THE FBI WEB SITE; WWW.FBI.GOV 6. POC:

Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that we will be having dinner at Cody's Cafe (corner of
Turnpike and Hollister) tomorrow (Friday) at 5:00 PM. Calli (KD6OVS)
will be having the dinner he was supposed to have had last month. If you
can join us, please let me know so I can make sure we have enough
seating.
The meeting tomorrow will be our yearly election of officers. In
addition, we will have a number of the SIGs present with the hope of
enticing you into each activity. Finally, we will also be soliciting
your ideas on what SBARC should be doing next year with topics to
include Hamfest, meetings, meeting raffle and prizes, meeting
refreshments, and ways to get more membership.
The meeting will be held at the Location: Goleta Union Schools Admin.
Board Room, 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta. The doors will open about
6:45 and the meeting will start promptly at 7:30 PM.
We need someone to make the coffee so if you are a coffee drinker, we'll
have the pot and coffee and you can make up your best coffee.
Refreshments are pot luck, so feel free to bring some refreshments as
well.
Thanks, and see you there!

The following was an email alert from one of my Technical Information sites!
If your PC has Windows XP and you receive a notice that Service Pack 3 or
SP3 is ready to install - DO NOT DO IT! Microsoft says it is not from them.
You can read the email below.
I know it has only been 24 hours since my last email but this news is just
surfacing on the Internet and could be a timely warning for you.
It seems an "unofficial" Windows XP Service Pack has been made available on
the Internet and anyone who installs it on their computers could be in
trouble!
Here is one quote from Microsoft I have read:
"Anyone who installs this thinking they are getting SP3 (even as a preview)
is being grossly mislead and is posing a significant potentially
non-recoverable risk to their PC and data," wrote Mike Brannigan, an
enterprise strategy and senior consultant at Microsoft.
SO BE WARNED!
...if you come across a link with a suggestion you download the software
then AVOID it.
Microsoft has said that its priority is Windows Vista, the next major
release of its operating system.
While the company does have plans to release XP SP3, it has not provided
details on what the service pack will contain. Microsoft has issued a
statement saying that the "content on the unofficial website(s) does not
represent Microsoft's plans for Windows XP SP3."
Got a friend who uses Windows XP? Then why not send them a copy of this
email...

Greetings SBARC Members and Guests
SBARC has a very interesting club meeting planned for you this Friday
night, November 18.
Of course, every November we have our election of officers for the
following year. In addition to those nominated by our Nominating
Committee, you may nominate someone from the floor if you wish. Be sure
they will be willing to serve.
Hopefully, we will also have a video presentation of the terrific
Jamboree-on-the-Air held at the Sedgwich Reserve last month with SBARC
members and the local Boy Scouts. Many Scouts are now interested in
Amateur Radio. Thanks to Justin Soenke, the son of Al Soenke, WA6VNN,
for being the videographer. The video should be very good. I am sure
you will enjoy it.
Additionally, the club will be having its annual SIG (Special Interest
Group) show-and-tell all around the room. I hope there will be space for
all the demonstrations. If you have a special interest, please bring
something to share with us.
Also, our Book Store will be open for business. Many ARRL books and a
good variety of others will be there for you to purchase and take home.
As usual, we will have a "Free-To-Good-Home table" and you can add to the
goodies there as well as take home stuff from there. C'mon, clean out
your shack.
Dennis, WB6OBB, will have a whole slew of great door prizes for you to
try to win. Bring some unwanted cash -- lots of it. He needs the money.
If you feel so motivated, please consider bringing some goodies for the
refreshment table -- cookies, cake, donuts, fresh fruit -- anything.
This promises to be one of the more enjoyable club meetings we have had
in a while. Your presence will make it even better.
The meeting will be at the Goleta Union School District board room, 401
N. Fairview Ave. which is directly across the street from the Goleta
Library.
The meeting starts at 7:30 P.M., but you might like to come earlier and
meet the others in our club as well as see all the goodies at the SIG
exhibits. This past Saturday at the VE testing session, 13 folks either
became hams or upgraded. Most will be coming and it would be great for
everyone to welcome them. A hand shake or a pat on the back would be in
order!
Next year's dues will again be $24 for the entire year and our Membership
Chair lady Ingrid Steele, KB6MQN, will be there to sign you up. Cash,
check, money order, silver doubloons or gold bullion will all work.
See you Friday,
Darryl Widman, KF6DI
SBARC Director
It is with deep sadness that I report the untimely death of Chester E.
Hadley, KF6OIF. Chet arose from his bed early this morning feeling
strangely, and his wife immediately called 9-1-1. He collapsed shortly
thereafter, and the paramedics were unable to revive him.
Chet just turned age 62, and was an active Ham holding a General Class
license. He retired from the Air Force in 1984 as a Reserve Major. One
of Chet's primary contributions to Amateur Radio was his expert handling
of messages in the NTS.
Ray Lischka, W9EC, is a neighbor and close friend of the Hadley family.
Ray will provide further information about services and remembrances in
the days ahead. Please remember Chet and his family in your thoughts
and prayers.

Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that this coming Saturday is the first Saturday of the
month, and the date of the monthly breakfast get-together. Breakfast
will take place at Cody's Restaurant starting at 8:00AM. Cody's is
located at 4898 Hollister Ave in the Turnpike shopping plaza. The hosts
are Dennis (WB6OBB) and JoAnn (KA6RPN) Schwendtner. If you are planning
on attending, please let them know so they can plan for the number of
people who will be attending.
