Well, as the description tells, the van transmission died just north of
Paso Robles. I called Dean about 8:30PM to let him know what was going
on (he was already in San Jose), and he headed back down south for the
2+ hours drive to pick up the transmitters. Because I didn't know what
exit we were parked in, we used simplex when he got close, and the
signal strength verified when he was getting close! He arrived about
11:15PM, picked up Bill Smathers and the transmitters, and headed back
up north. MANY thanks to Dean for doing this as it allowed the hunt to
proceed (almost) as planned!
The transmission would still engage in first gear as long as I didn't
exceed about 35 MPH, so I limped home after Dean left at about 30 MPH
driving the rest of Saturday night to return to SB. To complete this
exciting weekend, I ran out of gas on San Marcos Pass just south of the
Trout Club.
Hiroshi was Japan National ARDF Champion several years ago, and I
believe his wife did the same (although I don't see where she competed.)
In talking to Dean, it sounded like there were quite a few reflections
due to the damp weather up there to add to the challenge.
And no, I didn't plan for the transmission to give out so Jay would
stand a chance of winning :). Congratulations to Jay for a job well
done!!! I believe this was his first ARDF meet using standard
orienteering maps!

Marvin Johnston was bringings his transmitters up from
Santa Barbara, when his transmission quit in Pasa Robles.
Dean Dods stayed up late driving down to rescue the
transmitters so that we could have a meet. Jay won
using the blue magic receiver from OZ and a log periodic
array. Penny turned in an amazingly good performance
for a first timer, who had had about 6.5 minutes of
instruction before she went out. She borrowed Jay's
rig. Maybe it's time from me to build an LP array.

NEWS RELEASE: 2003-055 April 21, 2003
JPL OPEN HOUSE TO TAKE VISITORS TO THE PLANETS AND BEYOND
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., will hold an open
house on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
taking
visitors on a virtual ride through the solar system with this year's
theme,
"Journey To The Planets and Beyond."
This fun-filled, family event has a little of everything for space
enthusiasts and non-space buffs, from virtual hang gliding lessons to a
chance to build your own spacecraft and have your picture taken in
infrared
light. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with scientists and
engineers, who will staff booths to answer questions about current and
future missions.
Structured around the themes of technology, Earth, Mars, solar system,
and
the universe, visitors will see and learn more about how missions come
together. Watch student-built robots compete, or see an android head and
robotic arm come to life. Learn about the devices scientists use to
explore our planet, from the ground below to the outer reaches of Earth's
atmosphere. Or follow the water to Mars through a tour of the laboratory
designed for test-driving robotic vehicles destined for Mars. Explore
the
planets as you walk through a scale model of the solar system. See
spacecraft models or touch an iron meteorite. Learn how we communicate
with the spacecraft currently exploring the solar system and see the
world's lightest solid. See "Ring World," a multimedia presentation on
the
Cassini mission to Saturn, soon to be shown in planetariums around the
globe.
Admission is free. No backpacks or ice chests are allowed, with the
exception of small purses and diaper bags. Visitors, vehicles and
personal
belongings are subject to inspection. JPL is located at 4800 Oak Grove
Drive in Pasadena, off the 210 (Foothill) Freeway at the Berkshire
Avenue/Oak Grove Drive exit. Parking is available near the Oak Grove
main
gate and on the eastern boundary of JPL, accessible from Windsor Avenue
via
the Arroyo Boulevard exit off the 210 Freeway. Air-conditioned buses
will
run non-stop between all lots and JPL's main gate. Buses and tour guides
will move people between different locations around the facility.
Walking
is required to some locations.

There's lots of great on-foot foxhunting action coming up in the next
few
months. It starts next Sunday (April 27) with a challenging event in
Joe
Grant Park, east of San Jose. World Championships competitors Bob
Cooley
KF6VSE and Marvin Johnston KE6HTS are putting it on, and they're
expecting
participation from both northern and southern California
radio-orienteers.
The details, plus a map and directions, are available by pointing your
browser to www.homingin.com
Then on May 10-11, it's the CQ Magazine National Foxhunting Weekend.
We'll
be joining clubs around the country by having a free on-foot hunt in
Tri-City
Park on Saturday, May 10. It's part of the almost-annual Antennas In
The
Park picnic and operating event, sponosored by Fullerton Radio Club and
Western Amateur Radio Association. Mark your calendar and watch for
more
details as the date approaches.
In June (exact date to be announced), we'll have a challenging southern
California radio-orienteering event in a big park for both beginners and
experts, as hams across the country train for the USA ARDF Championships
in
Cincinnati from July 31 through August 3. Read more about the
championships
at www.ardfusa.com
Then in September, it's the annual ARRL Southwestern Division
convention,
which can always be counted on to provide
transmitter-hunting-for-dollars
opportunities. This year it's September 5-7, with a mobile T-hunt on
Friday
night, hunts on the convention grounds on Saturday, and a big
in-the-park
hunt on Sunday afternoon. We're hoping for a generous prize pool to
entice
you to join in.
Make this your year to discover the fun of hidden transmitter hunting.
I
hope to see you at an event soon.

Hi Folks .
I guess my first email sounded like I was bashing those of you that
didn't show up for Bernie's service. For that I apologize! It was that
Bernie's was the last of the two that I have attended lately and each
time I was surprised that not more of us were there. Please, I know
that some of you had things to do or couldn't get there for good
reasons. I guess I was thinking out loud and I get in trouble when I do
that - sometimes! Actually, those of you that have responded have been
very polite and offered your reasons why you could not attend. Of that
- I am not surprised. SBARC folks are a Class Act! But please!
..there is no need to tell me why you couldn't make it. The service
was well attended and Bernie's family was very moved by the turn out.
Now, with you permission, I will crawl back into my hole.
God bless you all and those of you that are ill I wish you a speedy
recovery!
