ATV SIG Members,
If you have trouble sleeping and are up early in the morning, try listening for MIR SSTV during the passes below. There is no guarantee that there will be transmissions and doppler effects may shift the 145.985 MHz freq up to 5 KHz, but some of the best things in life are a crap-shoot after all. These are also good times to visually see the space station since it is sunlit and the sky will be quite dark. It will appear to be the fastest moving "star" in the sky. Have fun!
73s,
Rod WB9KMO

This will be a really fun event as it has been in the past. Maybe we can get
a group of people to car pool down. I will be going down early to help with
the event put on by the Los Angeles Orienteering Club for National
Orienteering Day at Schabarum Park, but plan on being at Tri-City Park about
noon.
--------------------------
Tri-City Radio-Orienteering
May 6, 2000
This two-meter direction-finding practice/demonstration is sponsored by the
Fullerton Radio Club as part of its annual Antennas In The Park picnic. All
ages are welcome. A ham radio license and/or knowledge of radio equipment is
not required. There is no charge for participation.
If possible, bring a handi-talkie, receiver, or scanner covering the
two-meter band for each person who will be going ARDFing. If you have
directional antennas, attenuators, or other on-foot RDF equipment, be sure
to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. For those with no radio
gear, few extra ARDF receiver/antenna sets may be available.
As usual, there will be six cycling 2-meter FM hidden transmitters on
146.565 MHz. There may be a bonus transmitter on 80 meters (3580 KHz). If
you have RDF equipment for that band, be sure to bring it, too. The 80m fox
will be optional, and not counting for the final standings.
Practice 2-meter transmitters will go on the air around noon, and the main
6-fox hunt will begin at 1:30 PM. (Note the later-than-usual time.)
Some email just sent out to US Team members from Joe Moell, K0OV. It is
wonderful to see this kind of support coming from the ARRL!!!
------------------------
1. As some of you have noticed on the ARRL Web site, the ARRL Executive
Committee voted to establish a fund for the promotion of ARDF and to seed it
with $2000. Additional funding is being sought from the ARRL Foundation. I
just learned that Barry Shelley N1VXY, ARRL's Chief Financial Officer, will
oversee administration of this fund. Some team members are ac0tively
soliciting additional donations to this fund right now. If someone you know
wants to donate, have the check made out to "ARRL ARDF Support Fund" and
then
hold the check until we get official word where to send. I am presently
unsure as to the tax deductibility of donations to this fund.
Doing well at ARDF *requires* a knowledge of orienteering skills. Here is a
chance to learn and hone your map and compass skills!
--------------------------
Join us on some small but good color maps used by the Hi-Tech Adventure
Racers. We'll learn, then try some navigation techniques starting at
10:00 & 11:20ish. Part I (40 minutes) is on last year's map, and part
two (40 minutes) is on an older map, then Bridget takes over to lead
some exercises and then a trail run, while I go back to start part I
again at 11:20. Those who miss 10:00, and can't wait until 11:20 or are
later than 11:20 can start part II, but it sort of builds on part I, so
that may not be the best choice.
Topics: Orienting your map, simple bearing, simplify the map, attack
point, catching feature, aiming off, collecting feature, pace counting,
thumbing to keep map contact, parallel features, route choice, planning
ahead, finding the bathrooms when you really need to, learning on the
run, green/yellow/red light, SIMON SAYS ;>), and more!!!
Clothing: Shorts and t-shirt should be fine. Wear a lightweight shoe
with good tread. Bring a light windbreaker in the car. Bring your lunch
and join the rest of us after the training... the swimming beach MAY be
open.
Warning: I don't think we'll have any extra compasses to rent. So bring
your own!
Fees: $1 per adult...
We start at 10:00 AM and 11:20ish.
Directions: Take I-5 N. to Parker Rd. E. Past Lake Hughes Rd. (No closer
free parking). Turn Rt the stop sign (NEW INTERSECTION! ROAD ON MAP USED
TO GO STRAIGHT AND NOT REQUIRE A RIGHT TURN) onto Castaic Lk Rd, and
then enter at the kiosk. $6 parking. So, carpool. From the kiosk, take
left at the far road, down the hill, then right. Follow the O signs to
my car (look for an O flag hanging from the car). Sign in there, and
wait there if you're there for the 11:20 start.

>Hello Paul,
> Pleased to learn of your interest in Mir. They trnsmit on a freq of
>145.985 MHz FM but allow for doppler. Start about 3 to 5 KHz higher on AOS
>and follow them down past center freq by 3 to 5 KHz. If you have a
>receiver like the 736 just keep the discriminator reading centered. The
>SSTV mode is Robot 36. I was one of the 3 of us who built the Mir SSTV
>system and we chose R36 to keep transmissions short and eleminate the

The issue of good pictures in Key-Klix has come up several times. This looks
like it would be a very good meeting to attend!

>>> Printing Pictures, Part 2 <<<
Last time we talked about why when you scan a print you may find it
looks a lot different on the monitor (darker, lighter, washed-out,
muddy, colors wrong), then after you correct those problems so it looks
good on the screen you print it, only to discover the print looks wrong
again, but in a different way.
This time we will use a flatbed scanner and a 35mm scanner (Polaroid
4000) to demonstrate some of the issues of getting photos and other
images into the computer in preparation to reprinting them. We will use
the popular Epson 1200 color printer to show some of the consequences
of earlier decisions.
We will see the difference between doing a 24-bit color scan of a print
at 300ppi (pixels per inch) on the flatbed and a 36-bit scan of the
negative at 4000ppi on the Polaroid. The Polaroid gives us much more
information, but that is not an unmitigated advantage: the Polaroid is
much more expensive than the flatbed, and the files are much bigger
(110MB per picture) which means they are more expensive to manipulate
or store. We'll see that there are some conditions under which the
flatbed really is the better answer.
We may have another scanner or two as well, to get a better idea of
the range in price and capability available.

For those of you with clubs in California, please help get the word out
on
SB 1714
(the update below was written by Pacific Division Director Jim Maxwell,
W6CF):
SB 1714 has been assigned to the Local Government
Committee of the California Senate for hearings. The chair
of the Local Government Committee is Senator Richard K.
Rainey, of Contra Costa County. Senator Rainey is the
former County Sheriff, and was responsible for
establishing the Sheriff's Amateur Radio Reserve. A
committee hearing on this bill will be held on May 3, in
Sacramento. A favorable report by committee, as well as
future enactment, requires vigorous support by the amateur
community. Vigorous support means letters and telephone
calls to your State Senator, your State Assembly Member,
and Senator Rainey, asking them to support the bill and
explaining why you feel that way. The various Senate and
Assembly members in California are unlikely to know much
about Amateur Radio. They need to learn two things: how
many of us (who vote) there are and what we do for the
community. An avalanche of letters will help them
understand better on both points.
The first step is for all interested California hams
(and all hams in California should be interested!) to
write to Senator Rainey. In your letter note any local
ordinances in your City or County which stop you from
getting a permit for an antenna or make it more expensive.
Discuss how that antenna would be valuable for emergency
services, and discuss the fact that antenna regulations,
high permit fees and the like hurt all of the amateur
service as a disincentive to activity. Where it exists it
should help to make a point of cooperation with other
services, such as REACT, and to note specific
participation in emergency service situations. MARS
participants should point out the emergency support role
of that service and the fact that it relies extensively on
HF frequencies assigned by the military for that purpose.
Senator Rainey will understand without being told what
RACES is. Letters to him should be addressed to
Honorable Richard K. Rainey, Chair
Local Government Committee
State Capitol, Room 410
Sacramento, CA 95914
If you wish to comment by email, Senator Rainey's
address is senator.rainey(a)sen.ca.gov
Please also write to your own State Senator and
Assemblyman and ask them for their support of SB 1714.
Provide them with information similar to that written to
Senator Rainey, with one exception: Senator Rainey already
knows a great deal about ham radio, so it won't be
necessary to explain to him who we are.
The procedure for sponsoring bills is somewhat
different in the State of California than in the federal
Senate and House. Rather than "cosponsoring" a bill, the
procedure is to "co-author" a bill, and co-authorship may
cross the line between the Senate and Assembly. In your
letters, therefore, please also ask that they sign up as
co-authors of SB 1714.
Don't forget to include your name and return address on
all your letters!
You may follow the progress of this bill by going to
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov and following the links to
"subscribe" to the bill by number. You will then receive
email notice whenever any action takes place.
If you're not certain who your Senator/Assemblyman are,
go to http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html to locate
them.
Fellow SBARC Members -
I have decided to sell my Kenwood TS-680S. It is in great shape with only
one minor scratch on the top near the back. It covers 160M-6M - all modes
and has full CW breakin. It was my first HF rig and I really like it but I
have a Yaesu FT-990 and if I want to go mobile HF then I have to sell the
680S. Please call me if you are interested in checking it out - we can put
it on the air and take it for a "ride"! Asking $550.00
The VHF/UHF that I also want to sell is my mobile Kenwood TM-642AD - ("First
Prize" at 1997 Hamfest). It is a current model tri-bander with 2M and 220
modules installed. You can also purchase a third module - 440, 1.2ghz or 6M.
The triplexer goes with the rig. This devise matches the individual antenna
outputs of each module to a single antenna. The unit is almost 2.5 years old
and works great! I plan to replace it with a new Icom IC-706IIG or the new
Yaesu FT-100 - both of which handles 160M to 6M plus 2M and 440. So I won't
need two 2M rigs in my truck. I have the original mic plus the upgraded mic
that has the backlit keypad , box, manual, etc.
Asking $550 ($750 New.)
