Austin holds a PhD in astrophysics from UC Berkeley and is the author of the book:
Alien Vision: Exploring the Electromagnetic Spectrum with Imaging Technology (SPIE Optical Press, 2001).
He is the author of numerous articles and papers on infrared imaging,
is on the editorial advisory board of Advanced Imaging magazine and
holds two U.S. patents pertaining to infrared imaging systems and image processing.
