Title: Ham Radio Digital Modes
Digital communication has been a part of ham radio from the
very beginning, with the use of Morse Code. However in the past few years, the
power of computers and the Internet has led to an explosion of digital modes and
activity. Simply by connecting a computer's sound card to a radio and
downloading a program, one can experiment with a new digital mode, like PSK-31,
or easily use an older mode like RTTY or SSTV. Modes exist that transmit text,
digital voice, images and binary files. A novel mode is WSPR, which transmits at
rates of seconds per bit, and enables milliwatt-level communication over
HF.
In this talk I discuss the many types of digital modes found
in HF radio, what is necessary to get started, and will conduct a live demo at
the [UCSB] club
station.
